New Create Entries management page

This post is to report bugs in the new Create Entries page. This is a complete rewrite of the old Update page, in order to allow for future expansion and new features such as draft posts, scheduled posts, recurring posts, expanding the range of what can be posted to your journal, and a whole host of other awesome things.

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Not all features are completely implemented in the new Create Entries page yet. The biggest thing currently missing is the Rich Text editor -- the only option is the plain-old-HTML option. The design of the page is geared towards changing concepts and visual/workflow metaphors around what it means to "post an entry", too -- because of the forthcoming draft and scheduled posts, we needed to adapt some of the language and some of the ways we present concepts -- even though the draft and scheduled post functionality isn't ready to be released yet. So, if something looks awkward or like it doesn't quite fit, it's probably there to allow for something we'll be releasing in the future. (You can still mention it, though!)

Things we also consider to be bugs that should be reported, in addition to something not working right:

* if you can't figure out what to do at any step of the update process
* if you have accessibility-related problems (with your screenreader, with the tab order of the page, with the workflow, etc)
* if something about the new workflow completely breaks the way you use your journal, and you can't figure out any way to work around it (there may be a way to do what you're used to doing, but if you can't figure it out, that's something we might change or might want to document, etc)

You can enable or disable beta testing at any point.

Not yet enabled

* Rich Text editing
* Using the new Create Entries page for editing existing entries
* Using the new Create Entries page for comm admins deleting posts or performing admin overrides
* Draft posts of any type, including the in-browser saved drafts that exist right now

Known/Reported Bugs

* some difficulties crossposting, looks like possibly date-related? we're trying to figure it out.

Should be fixed

* Settings not properly saving when using the "gear" customize-this-page popup; some modules disappear
* Create Entries form being repeated after posting an entry
* Error in link to Beta Features at top of page
* Error messages when using new update page in older versions of Firefox
* Difficulties with IE (oh, IE)
* Errors with time being truncated
* inactive icons showing in the icon browser
* minsecurity of journal not reflecting properly in update form
* whole host of display glitches

Visual Look

[personal profile] stormy 2011-10-31 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I really prefer each module to look like it does when you're editing/configuring. They each have a header that is in a boxed cell. It keeps each section feeling like a section. When I look at it out of configuration, it feels like everything is squished. I don't really love horizontal rules between sections, so I wouldn't suggest that, but the table cell look that it has in configuration is really clean. Also, it helps separate the feel of a lot of black text mixing in together since the headers of each section aren't colored differently.

The only visual difference between sections currently is a very vague silver line space between them.

Also, for the textareas (subject and entry), I noticed you have a very discreet border-top in a medium blue shade. Might I suggest an inset border (similar to what I use in my search box and what google uses now):

This, please, so much. This whole wall of white makes it harder to spot what's the area for typing and what's the area for options (this makes the old version smarter!!!), harder to understand which option does what and where it is.

Firefox 7.01 Ubuntu 11-10 resolution 1600x900 (with entry form set to use column beside entry text)

Gear behaviour:

* Click the gear and the settings window opens, the grey background on module heading appears and the drag and drop to rearrange message appears along with the dotted line around module locations. The subheadings in modules aligns left.

* Click the gear again and the "Scroll down to arrange panels to your preference" line in the settings box vanishes and then reloads, causing the settings window to sort of bounce shorter and then back to normal. The grey shading and the dotted lines on the modules vanishes, but they are still dragable. The alignment of subheadings returns to the indented style.

* Subsequent clicks cycles through the two views and this persists. That is, if I save or cancel out of settings with the window in the no grey/no dotted line view, it reopens that way.

Also, someone said something about the browse and random icon buttons being squished, I don't see that at all. There is space around both buttons and they don't squish into the dropdown box.

Also also, I prefer the alignment within the modules that they have when they are styled for relocation.

Tweaked: the first click should now open, the second click should do the same as cancel, and that also takes care of the dotted lines being inconsistent.

Recreated the tag save button issues. The hovering over the save button difference are because the same css settings (visual image) isn't applied to the hover of the button. It's being made smaller, thus things shift. The same padding and border rounding needs to be added to the hover.

Also noticed the tags are listed horizontally four across and then moved to the next line, like a paragraph, rather than listed by columns/vertically.

I don't know if it's a bug or just hasn't been implemented, but I can't seem to minimize options.

I don't want options removed from the page in case I need them, but I would keep some things closed most of the time.

(Sorry for so many posts!)

- Perhaps the POST TO module not as a module at all, but existing in the grey header portion aligned/floating left of the Poll Create, Spellcheck, etc. Buttons.

It seems most intuitive to put it there so you always know what journal or community you're posting to, right at the top.

I could see maybe the functionality working like so:
POSTING TO: [DROPDOWN] [CHANGE USER?]

If you click to change user, the space opens up something like this:
USERNAME: [TEXTAREA] PASSWORD: [TEXTAREA] [CHANGE] [CANCEL]

Then changes to:
POSTING AS: [personal profile] stormy TO [DROPDOWN] [CHANGE USER?]

And, see, I'd like those other things to also be a module or at least be something I can shove to the bottom. I seldom create polls, seldom preview, and pretty much never use the spellcheck. I also rarely post to communities/other accounts. And I'm very unlikely to change settings once I have the form set up so I'm happy the first time. That bar is wasted-space clutter to me....

[personal profile] fu? I'd also love if I could move the "Post Entry" button up. Otherwise I need to toss out some modules I might occasionally use, since I can't minimize them and the post entry isn't on-screen. I seriously want a one-screen update display. And as I have my browser flat maximized.... That vertical scroll is driving me nuts.

Also, how is it picking the tab order? Or rather, WHY? I mean, I tab from subject to entry - then it takes me to the right sidebar - then the bottom two, left column then right, then finally to the post entry. How does it decide the right side bar has precedence?

Will there be any way in the future for me to force tab order, so it doesn't go through the modules I want to have available for the rare occasions that I use them, but don't use probably 95% of the time?
fu: Close-up of Fu, bringing a scoop of water to her mouth (Default)

[personal profile] fu 2011-11-04 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's going from top-to-bottom, left-to-right (based more or less on where you'd be looking first, reading stuff, etc)

And probably no way to force tab order unless you client-side-script it yourself, but we'll also likely have collapsing, which might help (tab through one item -- the module header -- rather than all the times in the module itself)

Firefox 7.0.1/Windows 7

Could we have screenshots of what the page is supposed to look like at this stage? It's pretty hard to understand what's normal and what isn't.

I can't collapse anything (there's no button or arrow).

Is the page styled? All I get are white boxes with transparent strips at the top and the bottom (I use Tropo Purple).

Please put preview and spell check at the bottom. Having to scroll up to be able to do this is so counterintuitive to me.

There's no space between Create Poll and the preview button (or is it the lack of styling?)

In Settings, Cancel is on the far left, Save is above, on the far right for me. This makes the Cancel button invisible (I had to look for it) as it's not in its expected place and is all alone on one line. (1440px wide screen, 15px font size)

Clicking twice on the date icon to get the calendar is not very easy to understand imo. Can't we have two icons (edit manually, calendar)?

The way items in categories are aligned, some stuff is on two lines when there is more than enough space to have it on one. I think it makes it harder than it should be to get what the option is about (for example the 'post as' option displays oddly for me: I get the radio button, my username then a second radio button then nothing and on a second line 'another user'. If I didn't know what this option was I wouldn't have understood why there was a second button and missed the second line if I wasn't already familiar with the option.)

Could keywords be bolded or something in the icon browser? It's hard to visually sort text. I would also vote for 'images only' to be the default. Finally, comments are cut off for me and usernames not displayed. I use a 15px minimum font size.

I would also like the Post Entry button to be above the boxes so I can post 'standard' entries without having to scroll to the bottom of the page. Or have it duplicated?

There appear to be two "folded" modules hidden underneath the "Post Entry" bar, at the foot of the page. I can only see the upper edge of gray. I think there needs to be a clearing element, before that bar, in the css?

Also, when I put modules in the side bar, they do not have the gray background to the header. This makes them a little hard to tell one from the next, at a glance, and I wind up staring at the sidebar for a few seconds before being able to make sense of it.

Then, I turned off the beta and posted another entry and it crossposted perfectly.

Other than that everything works great.

You guys have done a wonderful work. I love the interface, and having the chance to move things around to fit how I use them is made of win.

The Shiny:

OMG! I love the new icon browser and the tag browser. This'll make it so, so much easier to select the ones I want. (I'm ridiculously bad with my tags especially. But now I shall be able to select them all easily!) And I can move things around to be where I want them (mostly)! Have I mentioned my love for the tags browser yet? My brain is a sieve and I really appreciate the concept. <3

Things That Don't Work Quite Right (some of which I don't think has been mentioned before) Or That Don't Make Much Sense To My Brain:

Selecting tags with apostrophes in them from the tags browser creates a new tag. E.g. If I type "c'mon feet" into the tags module myself, I can select the tag without any problems and it'll post the way it's supposed to.
However, if I select the tag from the tags browser, it creates a new tag ("c") because it cuts off at the apostrophe. (It doesn't seem to happen with colons, though. I checked.) I hope that's clear...

The "create poll" option at the top is just a plain text link rather than a button like "preview" and "spell check" are. I'm not sure if that's intentional, but it looks weird.

I agree that the double-click is calendar option in the display date module is a bit counter-intuitive. I don't mind the calendar showing up after one click all that much, but the behaviour that I'd expected the button to display was to revert back to an uneditable date. (And I'd kind of really like it to do so on a third click. Right now, if I accidentally click the button twice, the only way to make it disappear is to select done below the calendar and, well, I'm lazy and spoiled and having it revert back to an uneditable date at some click makes sense to my brain whereas not closing it and reverting to the uneditable time/date doesn't.)

Speaking of, it doesn't really make sense to me to have the checkboxes in the display module showing by default. I don't use them all that often, so I don't really have a use for them unless I edit the date. It makes sense to my brain to hide them unless I explicitly ask to see them. I'm guessing that this is a mindset that comes from the old update form/page, though, since that's more or less how the edit date option there works.

The Wishlist:

I'd love to be able to move the grey bars around too. Or at least move some of my modules to be above the entry area. Notably the "post as" module. I'm used to that being at the top and it really helps me recall/see where I'm posting. I really like the idea that someone else had of making it part of the top grey bar, but since I saw that some people also really dislike that idea, maybe having an optional module section between that grey bar and the subject header would give everyone what they want?

I nth the request that the module background get a darker shade than they currently do the way that the old page did. If not because it's more orderly than because the wall of white is giving me a headache. :(

I also nth the comment to move the post button nearer the text entry box, though if you were to give me my pony of moving the bar its in this would become a rather moot point. ^-~

Oh. Keyword search. This is likely my ipod spoiling me, but I would love to have an "auto-clear" button for the search function in the icon and tags browsers.

And... that's as far as I've fiddled with it so far, really. Overall, I like the new page quite a bit. The modules seem to be staying put nicely for me and I haven't run into any/many usage problems beyond the ones I mentioned so far. I'm looking forward to playing with it more. ^-^

Re: tags with apostrophes

"c'mon feet" should work now *G*

And thanks for all your feedback! Filing away stuff to do; I rather like the auto-clear thing, and that should be fairly easy to implement.

Running Safari 5.1.1 on a Mac running Lion.

I might just be not seeing it, but I can't seem to figure out how to change whether or not something is cross posted to LJ?

Sounds like you might not have the crosspost module panel displaying--that's where those settings are. If you click the gear/go to the settings page, can you find that "Crosspost" in the Panels section and see if it is checked?

Autoformatting is on and I don't see a way to turn it off. (Not the worst problem in the world, but I had the "don't auto-format" box ticked on the old form and I've grown accustomed to entering my own line breaks.

(Workaround: immediately going to Edit Entry and saving without making any changes. The ticky is still ticked when using the old form.)

Autoformat is currently not implemented (need to figure out where it fits in the grand scheme of things!) but it'll be there before the page goes out of beta.

One love, and one suggestion.

Love: I am now moderately more inclined to provide a subject.

Suggestion: Jquery up something that puts the appropriate reading/custom/private icon to the left of the subject line, on selection.

(There is much love!  That's just the one in my head right now.)

When I started a post at 18:03 at first the field showed 18:3 without the zero. It displayed okay as 18:05 after I clicked on the calendar thing once.
The same problem happened again when I started a post at 02:07 only then both zeros were missing and it displayed as 2:7.

I'm using Firefox 7.0.1 on Ubuntu 10.10.

Oh, yes, this.  FF 3.6.23, Win7.  I just loaded the form, and I got 23:3.

Dear code: do not be afear'd of the five-character 24-hour time!  <

I am a little confused about the default order of icons when browsing icons. Right now, when I look at my icons, it just seems like they are pulled randomly. They aren't alphabetical by keyword or in order of frequency of use or by date uploaded. How are they being ordered?

I was wondering about the same thing. Anyway, someone mentioned this upthread and the problem has been noted.

Also, the time it fills in is wrong. The time on my computer is 7:19 pm. The time on the post it created is 4:26 pm, the same day. I assume this means that it saved the time when I first loaded the form? That seems odd. :| Although, admittedly, I rarely load the update form and leave it up for long!

Yup, though behavior is the same as the old update page. It's a bit less obvious in regular posting. Might be fixable or able to alleviate it when drafts are done.

So, I have no idea what this is about.

(a) I moved, last month, from Portland OR to New York NY.
(b) This means I moved from -0800 to -0500, or thereabouts.
(c) I updated this in my profile.
(d) I just made a private post at 23:08.
(e) The posted time is at 20:08?

Aroo?  I can't tell if this is related to the beta, or if I've missed some time-zone thingie...  I checked both the FAQ and the wiki, and didn't find anything, so.

Hmmmm. If you choose to show the display date module, what time does it say? is it the right time based on your current time, or is it based on the old timezone?
