New Create Entries beta, round two

The next code push will update the new Create Entries page in beta with a number of fixes for previously-reported bugs and enhancements. To make it easier to keep track, we're therefore opening up a new bug-reporting post (to avoid confusing things with bugs reported in the previous post).

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Things that are still not yet implemented:

* the "don't autoformat" button
* the rich text editor
* editing existing entries (it will display the old form)
* draft posts of any type, including autosaving of entries

There are also still some issues with IE, especially in "privacy mode". Anything that requires Javascript is currently not working in IE in privacy mode, and we're trying to figure out if there's something we can do to fix that or if the settings of the browser override anything we can do.

Firefox 8.0.1, Windows 7 Starter. Using Tropo Purple. All DW betas are turned on.

I have two "post entry" buttons on the Update2.0 page, one in the previous place (a purple bar at the bottom of the page) and one in the new place with the preview/spell check button.

Also, OMG OMG you moved the preview button THANK YOU THANK YOU.

The (old) "Edit Entries" page doesn't have the option to change the icon for the entry. Or I'm blind, that can also be the case. At least it used to be on the top-left next to the date? Tried it with IE7 and FF 3.6.24 so I don't think it has to do with my FF add-ons.

In addition: I edit an entry, then save it. The entry now uses my default icon instead of the icon I chose when I first posted.

I love the new changes! Having headers, different colors and a second post entry button means I can finally use it. I still wish the headers were a bit more distinctive but the current design is a good compromise.

One tiny thing I noticed: some space is missing between the spell check button and the post entry button(Windows 7, FF 8)

I *love* the fact that the post entry button tells me which community I'm posting to. Seriously, I don't know if it's new but it's amazing. However, the second, lower, bigger button doesn't. Maybe it could too.

The new changes make this updated create entries page very feasible for me to use it.

The Wonderful:
+ The higher post entry button.
+ The subtle background on the the modules.
+ The slightly lighter headers in each module.
+ Better spacing in each module for its contents.
+ The first post to button showing which community you're posting to.
+ Increased focus on design elements. The subtle shadow inset in each textarea when you use it, the inset headers with css shadows.
+ Beautiful transition when you select "another user".

The Dubious:
- No margin space in icon module between browse and random.
- No place to choose a community to post to. I had to go to the community page and pick to post to it.
- No margin space between spell check and post entry.
- Create poll would still look better as a button.
- Go to settings would look good as a button as well, perhaps a small ? icon image that would take you to your settings page. That's pretty universally accepted. Or reusing the settings wheel icon (maybe a smaller version) next to it.
- Still wondering how long usernames look in the POST AS: ()NAME ()ANOTHER USER section. Do long usernames drop the ()ANOTHER USER down to the second level?
- When posting to a community, and selecting 'another user', the post to button changes to a regular post, and the community doesn't clear. So we're still posting to the community, but it doesn't reflect it anymore in the post button.

Above all, it looks great [personal profile] fu, definitely a huge leap in the right direction. I could see myself using this.

Bug in Display:

Firefox 8 on Ubuntu 11.10 Using Celerity site skin

The browse button beside the icon has an underline (green) under the word browse, as if it's a link.

Problem persists with a change to Tropo red, now the underline is red.

Goes away on hover.

In Chromium 15.0.874.106 (Developer Build 107270 Linux) Ubuntu 11.10 there is no line.

However, in both browsers using keyboard navigation that button "lights up" twice on focus, once around the whole button and then around the link within it.

Design Feedback:

I find the #666 headings on the components a little too low contrast with the #eee background. Changing the text to #444 makes it more comfortable. #666 fails the standard colour difference test by a smidge.

There's a bunch of other grey on grey effects of very low contrast that are difficult for me to read as well:

The headings on the unused modules when one has the module placement editor view up is painfully low contrast with the background.

The cancel link in the Entry Form Options box is borderline uncomfortable in its contrast. (I think it should be a button anyway.)

The borders on buttons are very low contrast to the backgrounds the buttons sit on sometimes (the buttons within the modules like browse for tags). It works okay when the button is grey and the background is white, but when the background becomes grey like the button itself, it all gets a bit samey and blurry. I notice this is a popular style for form designers, I just compared your design to one of my operating system forms, and there, the grey of the background is lighter than the button grey by a higher margin and the button border is a bit darker as is the text. More like the way your buttons look on hover, which is a comfortable level of contrast.

In isolation, things like the button border contrast are less a problem than text/background contrast, and I realize there's a struggle to meet contrast guidelines when you want a fairly unobtrusive look to the form elements. But all that grey in very low contrast can make the form seem vaguely blurry when it actually isn't. Add in the drop shadows, and for someone with my middle-aged vision, the whole form feels uncomfortable to use, instead of looking stylish and modern.

Oooh thanks, this is awesome feedback! You're right that we wanted the color elements to be unobtrusive, but if it's turning out blurry for you, that's something we need to fix (you're probably not the only one affected, at that).

I've done some tweaking of the colors, and the tweaks are all now live on the site, so I hope that's more distinct (while still being unobtrusive). Please don't hesitate to let me know if you're still having trouble with the contrast!

Chrome 15 on Windows Vista.

I don't know if this is new or I just didn't notice it before (I should post more often, eh?), but in the Choose Icon browser, the visual distinction between the selected keyword and the unselected keywords for an icon with multiple keywords is almost unnoticeable. At first I didn't think clicking on the keywords was doing anything at all! It's slightly less subtle in IE9, but that might also be that by that point I'd realized that there was a distinction and was looking for it. Could this be made more visually dramatic, maybe by changing the color of the text and/or background as well as the color of the border around the selected keyword?

I think it would help out a ton if you could possibly include a screenshot of what you're seeing.

I'm on Firefox/Aurora on Windows 7 and in my choose icon browser, there are different background colors for the highlighted/selected icon, as well as a different font color, and the keywords for the icon appear at the top of the window where it was blank before.

Now between the keywords, the selected keyword has a red border around it, and the unselected keyword has a gray border around it. Are you thinking maybe about the unselected keywords being dark grey text on silvery background with grey border (sort of like disabled text) and the selected one retaining the red text and red border?

Update:
Actually, here's a set of images to illustrate what I mean. This is how it displays currently on Firefox Aurora/Win 7:

And per your comments, this is what I possibly suggest:

What do you think?

I'm using Maxthon 2.5.18, Windows 7.

When I try to use the 'Post' button under the text box, I get given a 404 message. I tried to post three times, and kept getting the same thing, but the post went through when I clicked on the bottom 'Post' button.

Though, this is most probably Maxthon being difficult again, because now that I'm comparing it to Firefox, Maxthon doesn't have the 'highlight text box upon hover' either. *sigh* The 'Post' button under the text box works in Firefox and Internet Explorer (though IE doesn't have 'highlight text box upon hover').

Kudos for the new page!

One tiny thing (for now): When I click on "Create Poll" it takes me to another page that says:

"Sorry

Which is of course fine, but it would be better if that option didn't even appear for the account types it cannot be used with.

Is this just for reporting bugs, or also for posting suggestions and/or usability case studies? >.>;

I didn't like that it spanned the whole width of my widescreen, so I found how to turn it back. But now all the boxes are hiding below the entry box, except for a single one in the sidebar, and I'm not able to click-and-drag them (which it feels like I ought to be able to).

*checks* Oh hey, it only lets you drag-and-drop when the settings thingy is clicked. Of course, partly because I have text magnification turned up, the box it'll let me drag them into wasn't actually on-screen at first, and I had to scroll while dragging to put it there.

It's shiny and less cluttered than some of the first prototypes though, and I like that some rarely-used features are hidden by default but still accessible if someone needs them ...

Firefox 8.0, Windows 7.

On the update page, when I use the lower right-hand corner of the entry text box to drag it bigger, the lower module bar moves with it but the sidebar allows the box to be dragged "underneath" and past it. This happens every time; I've reloaded the create entry page and opened it in different tabs to see if the problem persists. The tag box suffers a similar ailment, as when dragged larger downwards the lower module moves with it, but sideways it can be dragged out of the sidebar.

(Sidenote: in IE 9.0.8112.16421 (64-bit) there is no "draggy corner" to the entry text box or the tag box so no problem there, but there's no margin between the entry text box and the preview, spellcheck, post entry buttons.)

I don't know if this counts as a bug, but it's very unintuitive to figure out that the gear is what you need to click for settings for drag and drop, as well as further options such as current and cross-posting.

Pretty much every time I've seen the beta create entries page mentioned in someone's journal, there's a comment by someone else asking how to customize the page. It seems that pretty much everyone needs someone else to type out 'press the gear to customize', which I think is a sign that it's not clear.

I don't know if it's in the works for changes, but a thought crossed my mind. The header above the Subject box has 'Create Poll (icon) (gear icon)'. What about 'Create Poll (icon) Edit entry form settings (gear icon)' instead?

I think that something along those lines would fix the issue, as right now the only way to figure out what the gear does is to hover over it and read the hover text.

Yeah, agree.

Also, this is very likely a subset of the "doesn't save drafts" thing and I'm sure you folks already know about it, but the entry time isn't automatically keeping up with reality; it posts my entries as the time I start them, rather than when I finish them, if I leave the window open.

I am now amused (and glad I read through the comments first) because the specific suggestion I came here to make is absolutely opposite to what [personal profile] feathertail wants! ;D

I have a boatload of unused space both right and left of the page content, and I'd be really happy if the page did use the entire width of my screen, because I'd like to have one more column to the right of the entry box so I could move some more modules out from underneath it.

Screenshot of great wideness here.

Heeheehee yeah balancing everyone's needs is tricky!

That screenshot looks like something we did specifically for Tropospherical -- it has a maximum width on all page content) for readability, so that individual lines don't go splat all across the screen.

That is, it's not quite a bug as it is desired behavior on, say, entries with long lines, or on things like the textarea not being too wide across to scan easily.

Firefox 8.0.1 on Windows 7, 64-bit, with no extra addons installed. (Actually I have plenty of addons, but I tested this on a blank profile with no addons on it and it still happens, so...)

I've been on the new entry create page beta since it first came out to the public, but I am NOT on the JS beta. When I composed my most recent entry, I left the tag selection to last, and I wanted to use the tag browser for it. When I clicked the 'browse' button, the tag browser overlay appeared, but much to my surprise, the page then changed to show that my entry had been successfully posted.

This seems to be reproducible for me as every time I've done it, it's tried to post the entry. But since I haven't seen any other reports, I'm unsure if it's just me.

When posting an entry begun before another one is posted, the error message uses text messages suggesting:

...use the "Date Out of Order" option....

Except the option says:

Don't show on Reading Pages (allows dating out of order)

Even though the name does suggest (in parenthesis) that this might be the option, the error text should be changed to match more exactly the actual options available, should suggest something like 'use the "Don't show on Reading Pages" option, which allowed out-of-order posting' instead of "Date Out of Order."

I found a bug! *glee* It's a formating bug that occurs in the spellcheck output, starting in the second paragraph of a comment. Spellcheck flags mispelled words by overwriting them in red. Now with the bug, starting in the second paragraph of a comment, the word in red starts not on the first letter of the erroneous word, but in the space before, so it looks like this: this is aspelingg error.

*My browser: FireFox 3.5.; OS = Windows 7
*I went back and spellchecked the commnet (which was a reply to a comment) again with the same result. I'm also testing it here, which is why I let out the teal deer to play.
*I only use FireFox 3.5, so no, I haven't tried it on any other brower.
*I always have Javascript off unless I really need it, so this bug occurs with Javascript disabled. I haven't tried it with Javascript enabled.
*Testing it again here! ^_^

Third paragraph! (Or eighth carriage return, depending on how the text edditor interprets it.) Spellcheck time!

Wasn't looking for a bug, but found one.

Firefox 9.0, Google Chrome 16.0.912.63, Safari 5.1.2 (7534.52.7), OSX Lion 10.7.2

When using the new entry page, in Firefox, clicked on "browse" on tags. Tags started to load -- then it posted my entry. In Google and Safari, clicked on "browse" on tags with an empty entry, tags started to load -- and it tried to to post.

Other than that, I like the new look and speaking as someone with a fic journal, thank you for allowing the ability to post as another user.

That happened to me too. Out of interest, are you in the JS beta or not?

[edit: Seems like it's a bug that happens when people have a tag that's solely composed of numbers. [personal profile] fu is on it!]

Not a bug -- just feedback

[personal profile] cupidsbow 2011-12-21 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly like the new interface -- a lot. However, I find I use the "change date" and draft post features way more than I thought, so I've turned it off again.

I'll turn it back on once I can use those. :)

Sure, keep an eye out for new entries here on [site community profile] dw_beta :)

I do think the first one might already be possible: customize to show the display date by hitting the gear on the upper right of the form; then when you need to edit the date, hit the pencil/edit icon to the left of the date.

That leaves drafts, which should be fun when they come out! (For various values of fun. Ahem)

This is a feature request more than a bug, but it would be nice if the browse icons showed them sorted by name rather than date added. I don't always remember my keywords, and I haven't always added icons in a logical order.

Font Size (not necessarily a bug, but...)

[personal profile] archangelbeth 2011-12-22 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
The font size in the posting box is smaller than is happy-making for my eyes. (It's the same size in my comment box, right here, but for various reasons, it's not so troubling.) Is there any way to scale it up, or a bit of CSS in a FAQ I could use to bump it up? It's especially noticeable with the Subject line being so big.

I'm on Safari, OSX 10.5.8. Haven't tested in any other browsers.

(And to make it peeeeerfect, double-icon-option would be great, just so you know -- one at the top left for when I just know what icon I want before I post, and one at the bottom right... O;> )

Looks like the font size is now back to the easier-on-my-eyes size, WOO!

Opera 10, WinXP, nothing fancy going on.

1 - When I hit spell-check, the picture of my selected icon disappears from the Create Entries page. It's still selected in the drop-down, but the space where it should display is blank. If I select a different icon, it displays okay; if I hit spell-check again, the picture disappears again. The icon seems to post okay when I post the entry.

2 - If I already have tags in the tag field, and I use the tag browse to select another one, the previous tags disappear. The previous tags show as checked in the browse pop-up, but when I hit Save, only the newly-selected tag(s) appear in the tag field. It doesn't seem to matter whether the previous tags were entered via typing, drop-down, or browse. (Unlike with the icon bug, the "disappeared" tags do not post with the entry.)

3 - When I type in a tag, the drop-down list appears and narrows the selections as I continue typing. Fine so far. But if I hit Enter when I finish typing the tag, the drop-down list (with its one remaining, bolded option) doesn't disappear. It just sits there, sometimes hanging off the bottom of the tag field, sometimes partly overlaying it. It doesn't go away until I either start typing another tag (and get a fresh drop-down), or I click somewhere outside the tags area. If I click outside the tag area, the drop-down disappears but the typed text remains in the tag field (along with the little selected tag "box"). If I type a comma instead of Enter when I'm done typing the tag, however, everything works as it should.

Other non-bug comments:

I love the customizability, both what displays and where. Really, this is a brilliant idea.

I'd like to be able to put the date and icon selection at the top of the page instead of the bottom; those are "starting" things to my brain, not "ending" things.

For the tags drop-down list, it would be nice to have a scroll bar on the list itself, rather than having to scroll down the whole screen if the list is long.

I'm not wild about the little clickable buttons/boxes/whatchamacallums for the selected tags. I'd prefer an option to just have a plain text, comma-separated list.

This one's dumb, and I know it's dumb, but: I want my Subject field labeled. I know perfectly well what that field is for, but without something that says Subject: in front of it, my eye wants to skip right over it. I foresee many untitled entries in my future....

"I'd like to be able to put the date and icon selection at the top of the page instead of the bottom; those are "starting" things to my brain, not "ending" things."
You can sort of do that already, if you go into Settings and select 'Column alongside entry text', which means you can put panels beside the text box, unless you mean having the panels above the entry box?

"I want my Subject field labeled. I know perfectly well what that field is for, but without something that says Subject: in front of it, my eye wants to skip right over it."
This is there, but it depends on what web browser you're using at the moment ('Subject' and 'Your entry text...' appear on Firefox, but not in Maxthon or Internet Explorer, at least on my computer).

Hope that's a little helpful!

New system = ♥!

The customizable menus made me really sit down and think about my workflow for making a post. After about a minute, I had everything exactly the way I never knew I always wanted it. Seriously, I am grinning with glee! Some small part of my life will now go smoother than before, and it will add to my overall happy feelings about being here on DW.

I do have one suggestion so far. (I skimmed comments, but I may have missed this.) When customizing using a side column, the column begins directly beside the editing window, rather than the textbox for the post itself. That means I wasn't sure how far down the boxes were going to trail once the settings were closed. I had to play around a bit to make sure none of the right-column boxes (my key features I use for every post) were going to disappear off the screen at my preferred zoom level. For ease of use, it might make sense to start that column lower, next to the subject line, where it will move to after saving.

...that makes perfect sense. We'll have that fixed by the next code push (i.e., some time soon). Thank you!
