New JS on Journals: Last Call

We're planning on taking the "new JavaScript on journals" changes out of beta soon and making the changes the default for the entire site, so we've done a push today that adds the last few (reported) missing features, and fixes the last few (reported) really annoying behaviors.

There's always going to be one thing more though, so please make sure that you turn on beta for the new JS on journals, and tell us how that new JS works for you -- or doesn't work, if that's the case.

I'm interested in hearing about everything that's bothering you, no matter how tiny it seems! The sooner we know, the sooner we can fix it. (Just this code push, we fixed two things that seemed tiny: one was the hover menu fading way too quickly, another was how the attempt to change your poll vote would bring to you to a separate page instead of changing your vote on the page you were on. They were both things we missed at first, but once they were brought to our attention, we couldn't stop seeing them. And now they're fixed!)

So poke around, and let us know what you find. If you're looking for something to focus on, here's a short list of things we recently added or fixed:

  • added same-page comment tracking

  • fixed same-page changing of poll votes

  • added displaying errors when comment expansion fails to work

  • fixed hover menu fading away even when you didn't move your mouse

  • fixed the .cuttag-open CSS class so it applies to the contents of the opened cut tag (the way the old JS did), for people who want to customize this in their styles

  • made the bottom arrow jump you to the top of the cut tag, without affecting page forward/back

Assuming there are no major issues, we'll turn on the "new JS on journals" beta flag for everyone with our next code push for one last round of testing with the whole site, not just the people who've turned on the beta version. We'll keep it as a beta option at that point, so if anyone has serious problems, they can disable the beta and go back to the old JS while we fix the problem. After that, we'll take this code out of beta and make it the standard option for everyone, removing the old (existing) JavaScript entirely. So, if something's wrong, speak up now!

I have no idea what happened to the icon browsing feature, but when you click "small images" it looks like this with two pictures per row, instead of the icons collapsing to many per row, as it was before. This is with or without meta text.

The result is that it's much, MUCH longer, and it's REALLY tedius to scroll through. The whole reason I enable beta features at all is because of the icon browser, which has been the same for like 9 months now, so it's kind of... strange that it just changed now?

That was redesigned based on multiple rounds of feedback -- it's done to accomodate the meta-text (comments, keywords, descriptions) when small images are chosen, because otherwise people found it extremely hard to read. If you want the old behavior of multiple images per row, the full-size icon display still stretches out.

If you open a cut tag then refresh the page, it stays open. I don't think it should. Bug 4294 says when you hit back and forward but this goes beyond that.

Edit: cleared my cache and it was still open. Sticky little bugger.

I'm currently unable to switch back and forth between html and rich text editors on the beta page -- the options simply aren't there for it.

Rich text hasn't yet been implemented in the beta update page, so if you need a rich text editor, you'll need to keep the old version for a bit. We'll have *a* rich text editor before we take it out of beta, though it won't be the existing one (which is really old and really broken in many newer browsers).

It used to be that I could click "Edit Entry" to access the Rich Text Editor options so I could fix any html errors, etc. in my posts.

Now when I click it, if I have the Beta turned on, it puts me into this version that doesn't have RTE. Can you please put it back the other way, so that I don't have to keep switching between having Beta on and off since there's still not RTE available for Beta?

Or tell me what I'm doing wrong that it keeps tossing me into Beta Version to Edit posts?

I do a lot in HTML, but when I accidentally use LJ codes instead of DW codes, it's nice to have the RTE available to make corrections.

Thank you!

If you need the rich text editor, you'll need to turn off the new Create Entries beta. We haven't implemented a rich text editor for it yet, because all the available ones we've tried are pretty darn awful.

I don't know if there's an existing bug for this and if this is even the right place to make this report, but there is a user with multiple accounts who says the beta version of the icon browser is not working for her, but only on one of her accounts, and it works again if she turns off the beta.

By "not working" I mean this: she says "It just stays blank and doesn't load." On both entry poster and comment poster. It might be keyword-related.

I can't figure out how to change whether comments are screened on individual posts using the beta thing. By clicking the little wheel on the top right I managed to find it, but it was disabled and I couldn't figure out how to enable it.

That's the "new update page" beta, not the "new Javascript on journals" beta -- there's three different beta tests running right now -- but other people have mentioned that it's hard to figure out how to change the panels that are displayed, so we're looking into better ways of making that clearer. To enable the right panel for changing comment screening for an individual post, hit the gear icon (the one you already found), then check the "Comment Settings" checkbox and hit "Save". Once you've enabled that panel, it contains two drop-downs; changing screening settings is the second of the two, labelled "Screening", just like it's labelled in the old update page.

I dig the beta Create Entries page, apart from the lack of RTE that's already been mentioned. One other thing that might be nice, though, would be the ability to shift the text entry box to the right side of the screen and the panels to the left. It's not a big thing at all, just personal preference. I like having the icon panel open near my post for visual reference, and glancing to the right instead of the left is aesthetically odd. Obviously not a necessity, but the option would be nice!

all of a sudden i can't select and save an icon when making a new post. the drop-down menu shows up blank and it posts the default icon no matter what i select there, and the pop-up menu won't save icon selection. it doesn't save if i try to edit it after posting the entry, either. i tried in chrome, firefox, and opera. it only worked when i switched out of the beta.

if the icon has no keyword (given a pic### keyword) or was uploaded without an icon and then renamed, that's a known issue we're working on figuring out and fixing!

Go into Settings mode (upper right hand corner of the form, next to the gear icon) and make sure the "Comment Settings" pane is enabled. Disabling comments is done in the top of the two dropdowns in that pane, labelled 'Comments' -- "Disabled" is the second of three options.

The option to pick an icon has vanished entirely in beta entry page mode. It also doesn't seem to recognize that I have any tags and won't let me pick from my custom access filters. I've had this issue with this account and [personal profile] vivillon.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but in the last two or three days, my icon widget is gone from the Create a New Post page. If I edit the post, the option is there, but not on original entry creation. This happens both on my personal journal and on communities.

I have tried cutting the Icon Panel on and off in settings, restarting my browser (Chrome 35.0.1916.27 beta), and such. It works fine on Safari and Firefox.

Noticed this while editing a post. If I post an entry with the currents filled in and then edit it to remove all of the info (leaving the spaces blank/as "none"), it'll default to what ever you last had in the space instead of removing it. Also, with the mood section specifically: if I pick a custom mood initially, then edit the post, remove the custom mood text and pick a mood from the drop-down list, it'll revert back to the custom mood's text instead of changing to the selected mood.

Everything on the post/edit entry page with the most recent code push seems MASSIVE to me, and I also dislike the fact that the icon browse page no longer scrolls but instead is one really awkwardly big box.

1) What happens when you try to post an entry to a community? Do you get an error message, does the entry fail to post entirely. does it post to your journal instead, etc?

2) What browser (with full version) and operating system are you using?

3) What site skin are you using?

4) If you have any browser extensions installed: does the problem still happen if you disable extensions and try again?
