Responsive-design Create Entries page, joining/leaving communities, subscribing/granting access, etc

This code push included responsive redesigns of:

* the beta create entries page
* joining/leaving communities
* subscribing or granting access to people
* many of the site admin areas
* everything in the /tools directory
* and many more.

If you have problems with any of these pages, this is the place to report the problems!

There are several purposes behind our responsive site redesign. Aside from the boring technical ones (making it easier for us to maintain and troubleshoot the code, reducing browser incompatability, giving us more options in terms of designing, etc), the two big ones are:

* Improve the way the site looks and feels on small screens (such as on tablets and mobile devices) without worsening the experience for people using large screens (desktops and laptops).

* Improve the accessibility of the site: make it easier to access the site with screenreaders, interact with the site using alternate input devices, interact with the site using only the mouse or only the keyboard, etc.

This entry is for two things: reporting any actual display bugs or glitches with the pages (in your browser, whether on your computer or on your mobile device), and providing aesthetic feedback about the look and feel of the design.

If you're reporting display bugs or glitches: Please describe the glitch in as much detail as possible. Screenshots would be really helpful, especially if you're only seeing the glitch in one browser but not another, or only on your phone but not on your laptop. (You don't have to check for the glitch on multiple devices, but if you do, let us know which devices have the problem and which don't.)

If you have feedback specifically about the aesthetics or the look of the redesign (you think something needs more padding, want to suggest a different font/color/color combination/background/what-have-you, think something is in the wrong place, that kind of thing): Please be as specific as possible about what you think needs to be changed, or what's bugging you about the way things look. For instance, instead of saying "the header is so ugly and squished now, change it back", say "On my computer, the links in the header don't have enough space between them, so they look like they're running into each other."

(We know that people definitely have strong opinions about the way things should look -- that's why we're doing this incrementally -- but the most helpful feedback is the kind that's specific, concrete, and actionable.)

With all feedback, include the following:

* Which site skin you're using (you can find this on the Display tab of Manage Settings if you don't know)
* What browser and browser version you're seeing the problem in
* What operating system you're using
* What type of device you're using: laptop, desktop, phone, tablet, e-reader, etc. (And if phone/tablet/e-reader, what make and model.)
* What your display resolution is, and what your current browser size is. To check this if you aren't sure: go to whatsmy.browsersize.com and report the following numbers: Browser window width, browser window height, screen width, screen height.

If you're specifically reporting an issue with how the redesign works (or doesn't!) in your assistive technology setup, please also include:

* What assistive technology you're using (name of program, description of setup, etc)
* If it's software, the software version
* If it's workflow related (you find it difficult to navigate using keyboard-only navigation, for instance), a brief description of your workflow and what about the page is making it difficult

The tag browser doesn't load the correct tags if you hit browse once, switch to another journal then hit browse again. The only tags that load are the ones you loaded the first time around. I think this is a new bug but I'm not sure.

Hi, when I try to post to a custom filter, it doesn't work. I can select "custom filter" from the drop-down menu but I can't see where to choose which custom filter I want. When I click "edit" the entry posts as private-locked. When I select custom filter and press post it posts as private-locked.

I am using the site style (lynx?) and I haven't had issues with the beta post entries page before this change.

One more comment on the tag browser (I use it a LOT. >.> ).

The 'select' button on it ... the placement's a bit confusing. I keep thinking that the button is meant to go with the search box, not to save my tickied tags. I don't know if changing the wording to 'save selected' or moving it (further right? below the tags?) would be a better option but where/how it's working is just a little off.

I logged a help ticket, because I'm not sure if this is just me or another change. I can't select an icon with a double-click anymore. This seems to have only become an issue in the last few days. It's a pain for those of us who have always selected an icon with a double-click because now it just goes back to the default if you don't scroll back up and hit the select button.

I just saw the create entry page for the first time since the New Year (I don't post much, clearly), and oh my flying spaghetti monster was it a shock. I'm sure it looks okay on tablets, but on my desktop monitor, it's unnecessarily gigantic and cumbersome. The way it was before was perfect. Here is a screenshot with most of my grievances (the red boxes are all places where negative space could be removed):

Screenshot of DW's new create entry page

Sorry for the bluntness - this just wasn't at all what I expected to see when I went to make an entry, so it legitimately surprised me!

Rich Text Editor Problem

[personal profile] merrymen 2015-02-26 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I use the Beta Create Entries page. The Rich Text Editor is not showing/working at all. I already checked my Display settings (which had defaulted to HTML for some reason), but changing them to RTE didn't bring it back even after waiting a while. Where might the issue be?

Using Firefox (newest version) on Windows 7.

(Either this is something really obvious I'm just not getting, or there's an actual problem.)

edit?action=subscribe

[personal profile] ninetydegrees 2015-03-08 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Looks odd to me in FF 36.0.1, 17px:

* Subscribe is on a line but kinda below it as well. I don't think it's supposed to be positioned there. I don't understand why there's a line above filters instead of below it. Are the lines meant as separation (if so why are there two of them?) or as emphasis for the sub-section titles (if so why aren't they below them)?

* The three-level indentation doesn't make sense to me. It seems like someone forgot to close a tag. I think Subscribe and Filters should be vertically aligned, and text within each section should be intended just a bit.

* The main title says "X in your circle". Shouldn't it be "add X to your circle" or "subscribe to X"? At this point I haven't done anything yet so X is not in my circle.

* Why 'content filters'? They're called subscription filters everywhere else, right?

* If you wanna add text I think it should be more descriptive and done in a consistent way. Something like "Subscribe to X to display its entries on your Reading page." and "(Optional) Add entries from X to one of your subscription filters." with links to the corresponding FAQs for subscribe, Reading page and filters.

* I think the placement of the subscribe button is odd (why not below the text?) and that the filter button should make it clear that it's "subscribe and add to filter".

* What happens when you save is not ideal imo. There is no success message. I'm still on the same page instead of where I came from and if I go back I'm at the edit page again so it feels I'm kinda stuck.

Browser - Firefox 31.9 (technically Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:25.2) Gecko/20150115 Firefox/31.9 PaleMoon/25.2.0)

I'm seeing Unicode character boxes where the Create Entries page is trying to use a downloadable font for things like the expand/collapse arrows. I get a "bad URL or cross-site access not allowed" error message in the console for trying to load the font. I don't think cross-domain is going on here, but poking around on Stack Overflow says it could be that the browser is expecting quotes around the source URI and doesn't parse the code correctly otherwise - e.g., see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6541885/firefox-webfonts-not-loading. Assuming I'm looking in the right place, I see double quotes in the CSS, but maybe it is wanting single ones? *headscratch*

Hey! I'd like to say that I just tried the beta version of the new entry page and I love the changes! I wanted to really quick make a couple of suggestions, if you've got a minute.

1. I think it'd be really helpful if we could change/reorder the way the modules appear on the bottom. For example, I've posted hundreds of entries in various roleplay accounts and have never once used the sections under the 'currents' tab, so instead of minimizing it and leaving a gap, I think it would be neat if I could opt to remove it altogether.

2. On new entries, the icon browser used to be available even to non-paid accounts. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore, at least in my experience. Is this on purpose? If so, is it coming back? It was very useful!

Overall, though, my feedback is VERY POSITIVE. I love the way you can sticky a post with a simple check-mark now, I love the way you can browse tags instead of simply hit-or-miss typing in possibilities and hoping to remember what the tag was, and I love the fact that you can edit the actual content of the entry's link. It also looks way smoother overall. Good work! :D

EDIT: Wow, are there already settings to reorganize it?? Did I miss these? O: I see this commenter has a totally different layout than mine (made smaller to see the whole thing - also, ignore the 'google search' thing, that's a thing my browser is doing). So I'll look into it more, but if that's already an option, ignore suggestion #1!

I don't know if it's something I do or a bug or both but I often end up with the very fist tag of my list when adding new tags. I never select this particular tag on purpose and I only notice it once I've saved my entry so I wonder if this is the result of some actions I do (like hitting Enter?). Anyway this didn't use to happen. I'll try and see if I can see how this happens exactly.

Suggested change in behavior of picking custom filter

[personal profile] shyfoxling 2015-04-28 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Under the current behavior, once I have set a particular custom security filter for a post, if I decide I want to change to a different one (or just review my choice), I have to first set the post to some other security level (public/private/access) and then go back to custom to choose again.

Desired behavior would be that reopening the security menu and choosing "custom filtered" again would re-pop-up the modal (? is that what it's called?) that allows me to select the specific filter.

Also, would it be possible to see exactly what filter I chose? Like to have the "a custom filtered entry" text have the specific name of the filter following it in parentheses or something? (not sure how graceful an addition like this would be in terms of page layout - especially if someone had a long filter name.)

Re the new posting page: thank you so much for not removing the custom mood text input. That was a lot of what drove me from LiveJournal when they did their redesign of that page!

The “Post ‹security› ‹usejournal›” bar has a few problems:

  • The “Post” button is above and overlapping the security input. For me it's also very redundant with the bottom-of-page “Post Entry” button, since I keep a few metadata panels on the side and the rest hidden.
  • The usejournal input frequently reflows to a new line below the security input. This seems to be a little unpredictable, and it doesn't always pop back if I change either input and then change it back.
  • I'm not a fan of the modal input for custom access groups. I would prefer a list of access groups hidden/shown alongside the other elements; I'm not sure where to put it, though. (This is pretty minor.)

When I use a column alongside the entry text for the first set of panels (in my case, this is the only set of panels), the two of them together don't take up the entire width of the browser window. My browser offers a resize handle on the entry text field, but I can't grow it beyond its fixed width, so that doesn't help. If I could make that whole section wide enough, the problem with the usejournal input being knocked to the next line would be avoidable.

(Added: have some representative screenshots.)

We don't know if this has been reported, but the custom filter thing isn't working with assistive readers. Somewhere between the editing page and the "success" one, it defaults custom filtered entries to private. But it works when a sighted person does it. Also one of our fronters used his own account without the beta features turned on, and it works there.

Aesthetics of Create Entries.

[personal profile] extrapenguin 2017-02-15 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi!

With this code push, I decided to switch to the new create entries thing. Here are three aesthetic concerns:

1. I really want to have the side bar – where I can put the choose icon etc boxes – on the left. It is currently on the right. I find it distressing.

2. The post subject field's text size appears smaller than that of the main text field. I suspect this is because the subject field's font is a sans-serif while the main field's is a monospace, which is wider and appears larger. I would prefer if the fonts were switched around, or if the fonts were the same.

3. On the Create Entries page (and the Success! page after posting), the font size is large. Like, really large. The banner's text is the same as ever, but the size of the "Username - Post - Reading Page - Inbox - Account Settings - Help/Support" text is much larger than it used to be. Same for the text on the Success! page.

For both 2 and 3, I compared with the old Create Entries, and found it much more agreeable re: font size. (The new one is the visual equivalent of someone yelling in my face.) If you're concerned about low-vision people, perhaps a font size toggle? That way everyone could win.
