New Create Entries management page

This post is to report bugs in the new Create Entries page. This is a complete rewrite of the old Update page, in order to allow for future expansion and new features such as draft posts, scheduled posts, recurring posts, expanding the range of what can be posted to your journal, and a whole host of other awesome things.

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Not all features are completely implemented in the new Create Entries page yet. The biggest thing currently missing is the Rich Text editor -- the only option is the plain-old-HTML option. The design of the page is geared towards changing concepts and visual/workflow metaphors around what it means to "post an entry", too -- because of the forthcoming draft and scheduled posts, we needed to adapt some of the language and some of the ways we present concepts -- even though the draft and scheduled post functionality isn't ready to be released yet. So, if something looks awkward or like it doesn't quite fit, it's probably there to allow for something we'll be releasing in the future. (You can still mention it, though!)

Things we also consider to be bugs that should be reported, in addition to something not working right:

* if you can't figure out what to do at any step of the update process
* if you have accessibility-related problems (with your screenreader, with the tab order of the page, with the workflow, etc)
* if something about the new workflow completely breaks the way you use your journal, and you can't figure out any way to work around it (there may be a way to do what you're used to doing, but if you can't figure it out, that's something we might change or might want to document, etc)

You can enable or disable beta testing at any point.

Not yet enabled

* Rich Text editing
* Using the new Create Entries page for editing existing entries
* Using the new Create Entries page for comm admins deleting posts or performing admin overrides
* Draft posts of any type, including the in-browser saved drafts that exist right now

Known/Reported Bugs

* some difficulties crossposting, looks like possibly date-related? we're trying to figure it out.

Should be fixed

* Settings not properly saving when using the "gear" customize-this-page popup; some modules disappear
* Create Entries form being repeated after posting an entry
* Error in link to Beta Features at top of page
* Error messages when using new update page in older versions of Firefox
* Difficulties with IE (oh, IE)
* Errors with time being truncated
* inactive icons showing in the icon browser
* minsecurity of journal not reflecting properly in update form
* whole host of display glitches

I like the headers better, too. The differentiation between modules is much more effective.

my God, it is so much easier to browse the bugs people have already reported with "View top-level comments only". I could kiss the person who wrote that one.

Also, I love this page so much I want to take it dancing.

  • Anyway, using Opera 11.52 and Firefox 7.01, the tab order is confusing with the customize page. When I look carefully, I see that "Save" is slightly above "Cancel", but they look to be on the same line, and "Cancel" is to the left of "Save", so I expect them to be in the tab order with "Cancel" first. (Although I definitely prefer having "Save" first.)

  • The keyboard navigation of the userpic browsing seems to work only in very specific cases, and even that is confusing.
    • On Opera 11.52, I can use it, but I have to switch from tab navigation (used for form fields) to non-form element navigation at various, difficult to determine points in the process.
    • On whatever version of Opera I have at home, I can't select icons out of the icon browser at all, and when I am home I will get a better bug report for that one.
    • On Firefox 7.01, using the mouseless browsing extension, I seem to be able to select the appropriate icon out of the browser, but when I drop out of the icon browser my icon has changed. And on Firefox 7.01 not using the mouseless browsing extension, I can tab to the userpic I want, but I don't seem to have a way to select it -- neither space nor enter seems to do it.

  • The tag browser is totally awesome. That being said, the tab order is weird -- the first tab after the box is "save" and the first thing in the tab order after all of the checkboxes is the "x" to close the pop-up. When I have finished tabbing through and making all of my selections, I expect the next option to be "save" -- not least because it looks like it will be next in the visual layout of the form.

  • I assume that there is not a way to rearrange the page without drag and drop?

This just has to do with accessibility/journal usage issues, but... I'm finding the fact that posting defaults to public to be a deal-breaker with this. I access-lock my journal and on the old update page it was set to access-lock by default, now I have to be really careful to manually change it when I make a post.

I also really dislike the icon browser being on the bottom...

I'm using the latest version of Google Chrome on a Mac with OSX.6 on it.
I haven't looked in another browser, because I don't generally use another browser, and am not interested in having to switch just to post an entry.

My issue is that my journal is set to default post to access-locked, and the beta version does NOT do that. It defaults to public, so for me, that bug isn't fixed.

Just a little issue (using Firefox on Windows 7, but I suspect in this case it doesn't matter) - tags with apostrophes in them are truncated at the apostrophe to create a new tag. Not a huge issue, but since it doesn't seem to happen anywhere where you can choose your tags from a list except the new Create Entries page, figured it should be mentioned.

1. I can't check or uncheck modules. If I try all of them disappear.
2. Drafts aren't saved or won't load.

I really really really like it! (And I haven't found anything broken yet.) My first arrangement of the modules broke my accustomed process--I hadn't realized how very, very used I am to tabbing out of the entry box to the tag box--but I just moved the tag module up and now when I hit tab I end up in the tag box like I meant to. And speaking of the tag box, SO MUCH <3 for the new way of tagging!

Soooooo excited about drafts! I'm not expecting it for a while... But is there a general time frame where I can be excitedly waiting for it? *___*

Re: Crossposting

Updates on this. I'm still not getting any error messages event thought it isn't crossposting.

However, I went to edit my new entry today (which hadn't been crossposted) and noticed that the "ticky-boxes" for crossposting weren't clicked, even thought they had been active in my original post. I clicked them, made my change, hit "update changes" and voila, it crossposted the right entry all of a sudden.

Hope this helps.

Mac OS X 10.4.11, Firefox 3.6.23. Crossposting to LJ doesn't work. It just never shows up over on LJ and I never get a message in my inbox. When I edit the entry (which gives me the old version of the update page), it crossposts.

This might be worthy of note:

I have the Display Date widget displayed.  When I check the box manually, I experience the issue I mentioned earlier, la la la.

However!  [staff profile] denise said that the "check this box by default" request will not be fulfilled (perfectly fine, just wanted to check-see), so I wrote a quick Greasemonkey script to handle it.  The sole content:

document.getElementById("entrytime_auto_update").checked = "checked";

This, naturally, does not trigger whatever JS greys out the date-loaded bit, just above the "Use time when" option.  Doesn't bother me, and this is hardly an issue that would concern yall, as hello, third-party add-on.

Interestingly, though, using this script does not create the time zone difference issue; when I rely on the script to check that box for me, the time is accurate.  It's only when I manually check the box (or uncheck and check it, if the script is enabled), that the -3 hours issue appears.

Nifty!  I mean, bothersome, but nifty!

Matches my symptoms - for me, it's cross-posting (and then "updating") an older entry from 2001 that I had imported from LJ. Turning on success notifications and trying it may tell you which entry of yours it is cross-posting, and whether it's consistent....

Alas. Makes sense, though, and it's a minor thing in any case. I usually open it, write posts, and put them up fast enough not to notice the effect. It's only because I was popping it open, testing the gui, wandering away with it still open, coming back, deciding to test a post, etc., that I even noticed, I think.

This one is our fault -- entries posted through the beta posting page weren't being crossposted properly. Fixed now; if you want to crosspost the entries that you made via the crossposting page before, edit them and save (no need to make any changes)

Crossposting from the beta create entries page was broken; we just fixed it. So now anything you post will follow the default crossposting settings (it wouldn't have before!)

The crossposting will happen even if the module isn't visible (you can leave it unvisible to hide clutter); if you do need to change something, you can make the module appear using the gear icon up top.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown, that was very helpful!

Fixed it moving forward; you'll need to edit + save any entries you've previously posted through the beta create entries page to get them to crosspost as well.
