New Create Entries management page

This post is to report bugs in the new Create Entries page. This is a complete rewrite of the old Update page, in order to allow for future expansion and new features such as draft posts, scheduled posts, recurring posts, expanding the range of what can be posted to your journal, and a whole host of other awesome things.

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Not all features are completely implemented in the new Create Entries page yet. The biggest thing currently missing is the Rich Text editor -- the only option is the plain-old-HTML option. The design of the page is geared towards changing concepts and visual/workflow metaphors around what it means to "post an entry", too -- because of the forthcoming draft and scheduled posts, we needed to adapt some of the language and some of the ways we present concepts -- even though the draft and scheduled post functionality isn't ready to be released yet. So, if something looks awkward or like it doesn't quite fit, it's probably there to allow for something we'll be releasing in the future. (You can still mention it, though!)

Things we also consider to be bugs that should be reported, in addition to something not working right:

* if you can't figure out what to do at any step of the update process
* if you have accessibility-related problems (with your screenreader, with the tab order of the page, with the workflow, etc)
* if something about the new workflow completely breaks the way you use your journal, and you can't figure out any way to work around it (there may be a way to do what you're used to doing, but if you can't figure it out, that's something we might change or might want to document, etc)

You can enable or disable beta testing at any point.

Not yet enabled

* Rich Text editing
* Using the new Create Entries page for editing existing entries
* Using the new Create Entries page for comm admins deleting posts or performing admin overrides
* Draft posts of any type, including the in-browser saved drafts that exist right now

Known/Reported Bugs

* some difficulties crossposting, looks like possibly date-related? we're trying to figure it out.

Should be fixed

* Settings not properly saving when using the "gear" customize-this-page popup; some modules disappear
* Create Entries form being repeated after posting an entry
* Error in link to Beta Features at top of page
* Error messages when using new update page in older versions of Firefox
* Difficulties with IE (oh, IE)
* Errors with time being truncated
* inactive icons showing in the icon browser
* minsecurity of journal not reflecting properly in update form
* whole host of display glitches

I haven't read up for everyone else's comments, but: I ...can't crosspost? That is, there's no place I can find to do so. And I think this isn't in the not yet ready list?

Linux Mint/Firefox 7.01; also happens in Chromium on the same computer.

Is your cross-post module checked to show up in the settings? (Er... To be safe, you can get to the settings by pressing the little gear icon next to the spellcheck button at the top.)

Not sure if this is an LJ issue or not, but I'm using the beta posting page and my entries aren't crossposting to LJ. I'm on a Mac running 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1, haven't tried a different browser.

I post the entry, get a note that crosspost has been requested, but then I never get a message in my inbox to let me know whether it went through or not, and the post never shows up on LJ.

I had the same, I could only get it to crosspost by editing it.

Windows XP, Firefox 7.0.1. I've tested it both with and without the crossposter module showing. It was working fine, even with the changes on LJ, until I switched to the new update page.

Not a bug so much as a UI thing - I really like the look of the panels when they're in their draggable state - more discrete and easy to skim and identify what bit is what. Can they look like this when they're in their standard state as well?

I kind of feel like they shouldn't change appearances so much between states anyway, hrm...

Reloading the page doesn't prompt you to load a saved version - I think it just loads whatever local cache you have.

Also, when it reloads, it loses the security settings on the entry, and also the tags and the currents. It actually did that before the new version - I reported that to Suggestions back in December last year and it hasn't been fixed or even filed as a bug.

I really do think security should be a priority. It's very easy to reload a page and forget to redo the access filters.

Oh, hm! We have that filed as a bug (it's assigned to me, actually). Will update the tag on that entry, I bet that just got missed.

You're right, the beta page doesn't currently save/restore your entry. I'm working on it, probably roll it out as part of the drafts spec.

Ok, I see you're already know about the IE issues, but... I'm experiencing them too. Do you mean these issues will be fixed in the future or do you mean they are fixed now?

I tried the new update page on both:
1) IE8, Windows XP - my min. security level showed. But I can't save the modules thingy and all the boxes are deselected. When I select a mood, the icon shows.

2) IE9, Windows 7 - my min. security level does not show - it shows public. I can't save the modules thingy and all the boxes are deselected. When I select a mood, the icon doesn't show.

Anyway, this is what I've observed so far.

1) IE8: can you try resetting your modules, reloading the page, and then trying again? have put out a couple fixes to a few subtle bugs so hopefully one of those covers the case you're running into

2) IE9: JS was completely broken in IE9 for a while (even though it was perfectly okay in earlier versions. ack. Usually it's the other way around isnt it?)

Fixed now though; everything should work fine there.

* Would it be possible to have "Use the time when entry is posted", within the Display Date widget, to be default checked?  I mean, maybe not, it might add too much clutter, but one will never receive if one never asks, so.

* Hee hee hee random userpic.

* If there are no active modules in the bottom area, could the blank boxen be removed?  I have all of mine to the right, and none on the bottom, and so.

* FISH-WISHING: Could there be a left-hand column, instead of a right-hand column...?

my God, it is so much easier to browse the bugs people have already reported with "View top-level comments only". I could kiss the person who wrote that one.

Also, I love this page so much I want to take it dancing.

  • Anyway, using Opera 11.52 and Firefox 7.01, the tab order is confusing with the customize page. When I look carefully, I see that "Save" is slightly above "Cancel", but they look to be on the same line, and "Cancel" is to the left of "Save", so I expect them to be in the tab order with "Cancel" first. (Although I definitely prefer having "Save" first.)

  • The keyboard navigation of the userpic browsing seems to work only in very specific cases, and even that is confusing.
    • On Opera 11.52, I can use it, but I have to switch from tab navigation (used for form fields) to non-form element navigation at various, difficult to determine points in the process.
    • On whatever version of Opera I have at home, I can't select icons out of the icon browser at all, and when I am home I will get a better bug report for that one.
    • On Firefox 7.01, using the mouseless browsing extension, I seem to be able to select the appropriate icon out of the browser, but when I drop out of the icon browser my icon has changed. And on Firefox 7.01 not using the mouseless browsing extension, I can tab to the userpic I want, but I don't seem to have a way to select it -- neither space nor enter seems to do it.

  • The tag browser is totally awesome. That being said, the tab order is weird -- the first tab after the box is "save" and the first thing in the tab order after all of the checkboxes is the "x" to close the pop-up. When I have finished tabbing through and making all of my selections, I expect the next option to be "save" -- not least because it looks like it will be next in the visual layout of the form.

  • I assume that there is not a way to rearrange the page without drag and drop?

This just has to do with accessibility/journal usage issues, but... I'm finding the fact that posting defaults to public to be a deal-breaker with this. I access-lock my journal and on the old update page it was set to access-lock by default, now I have to be really careful to manually change it when I make a post.

I also really dislike the icon browser being on the bottom...

I'm using the latest version of Google Chrome on a Mac with OSX.6 on it.
I haven't looked in another browser, because I don't generally use another browser, and am not interested in having to switch just to post an entry.

My issue is that my journal is set to default post to access-locked, and the beta version does NOT do that. It defaults to public, so for me, that bug isn't fixed.

Note that even though it says "public", once you hit post, it will respect your minsecurity -- but I agree that it really should display the minsecurity before you post!

Just a little issue (using Firefox on Windows 7, but I suspect in this case it doesn't matter) - tags with apostrophes in them are truncated at the apostrophe to create a new tag. Not a huge issue, but since it doesn't seem to happen anywhere where you can choose your tags from a list except the new Create Entries page, figured it should be mentioned.

I really really really like it! (And I haven't found anything broken yet.) My first arrangement of the modules broke my accustomed process--I hadn't realized how very, very used I am to tabbing out of the entry box to the tag box--but I just moved the tag module up and now when I hit tab I end up in the tag box like I meant to. And speaking of the tag box, SO MUCH <3 for the new way of tagging!

Hihi - possibly someone else has reported this one already, but just to be sure... The post as "highlyeccentric/another user" radio buttons are on the same level, but the actual description "another user" spills over into the next line. From there, it looks like it could be related to the "post to" box - I dropped down 'post to' to see if I could post to my other account before realising DW has no way of knowing who the two "me"s are.

A cropped screencap is here.

I'm using Chrome, I *think* Chrome 6.24. The same thing happens in Firefox 3, my alternate browser. I'm using Windows Vista and it seems to be a consistent thing (including if I change the size of my browser window). My monitor resolution is 1280 by 800, if that has any bearing on things.

Other than that, it looks shiny!

It'd be nice if I could pick what displayed of the "currents" - the only one I ever use or want to use is the current mood / custom mood pair. I'd love to ditch the extra two lines spent on current location and music. (Then I could put "post-as" back and still have the post button in view - I think, with that, I could get used to the minimalistic interface needed to keep from having to scroll to that button.)

(1) Reproduced on two browsers/systems [FF7/MacOS & Chrome 15/WinXP], I have tags with apostrophes in them, and while I can type it out and do a tab select on them and that works fine, if I tick the checkbox to select one of those tags, the tag that shows up in the tag box is a "new" tag that cuts off where the apostrophe ends.

(2) Reproduced only on FF7/MacOS at this point, but the icon selection browser isn't working. The box opens up and I can view all the icons, but if I click on an icon, nothing happens, and if I click on the keyword link, the page refreshes, but still nothing is selected. This works fine in Chrome on Windows for me, though.

I feel like the gear icon for preferences is sort of "hidden" because we're not expecting it to be there. While I knew there was supposed to be some sort of drag-drop useability, I couldn't find it until I was looking in comments here and someone else pointed out the gear icon. I'm kinda wondering if it'd be possible at least on final release to do a tooltip popup to point it out to first-time users (along with possibly some of the other features people complain about that are there, but not where they expect).

"Create poll" being a text link doesn't have enough right margin next to the preview button, and possibly also should be a button anyway.

The "Security Level:" label looks weird to me... It seems odd when it stays as 40% width so it's on two-lines instead of just one for no apparent reason. Maybe just use a margin-right: 1em; and remove width?

Margin/padding on the chosen icon in the icon box also looks weird-- it's flush against the top of the container from the 5px padding. (Haven't looked in all browsers-- I assume there was a reason for that somewhere, but taking it out entirely makes it look better in Chrome.) (Oh! I just realized this was also noticeable because I was looking at the v=2 style, which I do like much better, but yes. It's not as obvious in the boxless style.)

And I'm adding agreement that I'd prefer the "Post Entry" button closer to the entry text box, rather than at the bottom of the screen. I keep having to hunt for it.

Like the above user, on FF7 if I use the tag browser to add tags, it truncates at the apostrophe, and treats the truncated version as a new tag. If I go into edit tags to fix it, it works fine, it's just from the new tag browser.

I'm on Snow Leopard, OS X. I didn't try it in Chrome to see if it did the same thing, but I did try with multiple tags, and it does seem to ONLY do it with apostrophes.

Tags Deletion Issue

[personal profile] sweet_sparrow 2011-11-02 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure this was mentioned before, but I don't think so...

Short version of the issue:
If you delete tags from the tags module (by clicking the little x next to them), posting the entry still adds the deleted tags to that entry.

The longer version:
I was playing around with the tags browser to see if the issue with tags being truncated at an apostrophe was fixed. (Also to see if it truncated after square brackets; those are fine.) But the tags weren't really relevant to the post I was playing around on, so I deleted them from the module by clicking the little x next to them. When I went to check my entry to see that all'd gone well, it listed the tags I'd previously deleted along with the post itself.

So then I made another post going through the exact same steps:
- Select tags in tags browser
- Delete tags from tags module
- Post entry
and then another going through the same steps again except changing which tags I deleted (just in case it related to the apostrophe issue somehow) and discovered that in both cases the tags I'd deleted via the tags module still showed up on the post.

So then I made another test post and removed the tags from within the tags browser and those indeed actually stayed deleted after I'd posted the entry. And, just for completeness's sake, I checked out what would happen if I added the tags through typing them (as opposed to the tags browser) and then deleting them. The deleted tags showed up.

So... basically, deleting tags from within the module doesn't work but deleting them through the tags browser does.

I tried it in Firefox 8.0 and Opera 11.51 in/on Windows XP and the issue occurs in both browsers.

I've had that same thing with deleted tags showing up. I didn't realise they could disappear from the tags browser; you mean unchecking them, right? Hooray, now I can delete them properly! (Though I'm excited for the bug being fixed so I don't have to remember that.)

I've also had the same thing with tags with apostrophes, which is pretty annoying since one of my most-used tags has one.

It's quite possible that I'm dumb, but people were talking in this post and elsewhere about a "gear" and "dragging and dropping widgets" and "scrolling down to arrange things" and I couldn't figure out any of that. I have now found the gear! Which brings me to the rest of it! But the gear was light gray on gray and...that was some frustrating time, spent looking. So.

Also, in the more of a "I think it's a bug" end of things, when I first opened the page, I couldn't scroll by dragging the scroll bar, only by clicking at the bottom of the scroller...thingy. Although it seems to be working now. I'm using Chrome on Windows Vista.

Huh, and then when I change things around and save it, then reload the page, my sidebar goes back to the bottom. When I clicked "column alongside" again, everything came back in the order I'd picked, though.

Um, so it's Chrome 15.0.874.106 m, I guess.

I didn't see this reported yet but if it has been, sorry for the doublepost.

I like long tags and I know this is a drag. But it says "characters per tag: 50" in the tag box. So I happily started adding a new tag which was 44 characters long but it was cut after 40 characters. Is this perhaps just a typo on the page or something else? I've had long tags cut before but I just assumed I'd gone over the character limit.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.23 on Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3. Haven't tested on another browser. (If this even is a bug... :/)

Nope not reported yet (wouldn't be a problem either if it was, report away :))

I'm able to type up to 50 characters though; do you remember what tag it was so I can try it out?

ETA: Oh oops! I tried posting, and I see what you mean. My bad, the number in the interface was wrong; it was supposed to be 40 all along.

Firefox 7 on a Mac 10.6

If there is a posting error such as posting with the wrong time (having posted something else since I started the entry in question, and forgot to check "use time of posting") the reloaded form keeps my entry and tags but loses the security setting I had already selected.

I'm using the new posting interface with Win7x64 Build 7601 surfing with Chrome 15.0.874.106 [allegedly the most current and fully-updated version of each]. I also surf and browse both DW and the internet at between a 150 and a 300 percent magnification-from-original, which means pages coded to all display on the same screen do, but I have to scroll up and down to see all of them.

1. On the grey bar above the posting box are the words "Create Poll", "Preview", and "Spell Check". "Create Poll" is a hotlink; the other two are buttons. For that reason, I spent a lot of time thinking the buttons related only to the hotlink. Since all three of them are things you can do in the comment box, could all three of them be buttons?

2. I *L♥VE* the preview panes for tags and icons. Unfortunately, I don't seem to ever be able to change my posting icon from the preview pane. I select the icon, whose name appears in the box as "keywords of selected icon". I press "select". I close the window. Nope, no new icon.

3. Tonight I wrote a post of transcendent wonderfulness. I then looked for the "Post" button. For five minutes. Then I made a copy of my post, went into the settings page, re-set everything, and came back [my post had not vanished, yay for that]. Nope, I had not managed to hide the "Post" button. It's [clearly I finally found it], all the way down at the bottom right. Or… one full screen away from the post composition screen [even when I reduced the stuff on the screen as far as I could].

So this isn't really a bug report, because the "Post" button works fine when I finally find it. The trouble is, it's way out in the middle of nowhere. I would put it on the top bar along with the other buttons that affect the contents of the posting box, but that's just me.

I can't find the option to turn off crossposting for a specific entry as I'm posting it.

It sounds like you might not have the crossposting panel on--can you try adding it using the gear in the top of the interface?
