New Create Entries beta, round two

The next code push will update the new Create Entries page in beta with a number of fixes for previously-reported bugs and enhancements. To make it easier to keep track, we're therefore opening up a new bug-reporting post (to avoid confusing things with bugs reported in the previous post).

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Things that are still not yet implemented:

* the "don't autoformat" button
* the rich text editor
* editing existing entries (it will display the old form)
* draft posts of any type, including autosaving of entries

There are also still some issues with IE, especially in "privacy mode". Anything that requires Javascript is currently not working in IE in privacy mode, and we're trying to figure out if there's something we can do to fix that or if the settings of the browser override anything we can do.

I seem to have been switched to the new Create Entries form without having opted in -- I noticed a sudden change to my posting screen a few days ago, and it's missing the features you specifically call out as being gone (no rich text editor, no autosaving of drafts). It also doesn't autofill tags, and neither the Preview or Update Date buttons work -- I press them, and nothing happens. According to http://www.dreamwidth.org/betafeatures I do *not* have either of the Beta tests enabled. I'm running Safari 5.1.2 on a MacBookAir with MacOS Lion 10.7.2. Thanks!

It sounds like you're on the old update page but that the JS has stopped working. ( the update date button no longer exists in the new version, having been replaced with a checkbox)

I'd recommend doing a force reload of the page in case it has to do with one of the files not being loaded right the first time. Do: cmd+shift+r

Otherwise, check any extensions you might have to see if they're blocking scripts from Dreamwidth.

I'm not familiar enough with Safari extensions to suggest specific ones, alas.

All else fails, check Safari's error console and submit a supportrequest! They can help you troubleshoot in more detail.

I can't find the icon selector any more on the beta create entries page. I can't tell if I'm just really, really thoroughly looking past it instead of at it, or if it's really gone--but I did look several times on different days, and checked in the settings to make sure I hadn't disabled it, and cleared my cache (since that was what fixed my last problem with the update page) and I still can't see it. (And doing a ctrl-f to search for "icon" doesn't find it either, so I think I'm probably not just overlooking the selector.)

Any ideas?

Edit: FF 9.0.1, Win7. I do see the icon selector when I go to the update page on my iPad, which seems to have a mobile version of the page with the modules in a single column.

OK, so in addition to the bug of 'Subject entry text has no character limit, even though there is one in reality, and it doesn't notify you, just cuts off when you post,' I tried to check today to see if my long title was short enough to fit, and 'Preview' told me it was, but Preview was lying to me and when it posted it cut off. So there's some sort of disconnect there.

The subject line didn't cut me off at the character limit until I went back and edited the post using the regular editor. The beta editor just dropped the last few words during the posting process, without warning.

(Firefox 4.0.1, OS 10.6.4)

I have not tested this in another browser, but I've seen it 3 times in this browser. Here's an example.

I just finally got around to trying this out for the first time and I love it. :) It took some doing to arrange everything in an order that agreed with me, but I think I've got it now.

I only have two small complaints:

1) The preview/spell check/post buttons are a little awkwardly positioned. They're much closer to the entry text field than the subject field is. It would look better if these gaps were of the same height. Also, because the two text fields (subject and entry) are maybe about two pixels smaller than the things that surround them, the buttons appear to "stick out" into the empty space between that area and the right column. I don't know if I'm describing this very well, but basically ... it just looks like the buttons aren't quite where they're supposed to be.

2) When I select a mood, the currents module suddenly expands downwards as the image appears. Could this perhaps be avoided by placing images to the right of the drop-down rather than below it (as long as they're not too large)?

In case some of this is just me, I use Windows XP and the latest version of Firefox.

I posted about this a month or two ago, but I never received a response, so I don't know if this is an acknowledged problem or if it was overlooked. I apologize if this is already being looked into and I'm beating a dead horse.

I'm still having a lot of problems with the post entry page deciding the submission page doesn't exist and purging my entry before it's posted. It doesn't happen every time (most of the time, though - about 4 of 5 posts), and I don't know if it does it on the non-beta posting page.

I write up my entry, I pick my icon/mood, I tell it to make the timestamp the same as when it's posted, and I click Post. And I get a 404 "I don't know what you're talking about!" page. Hitting Back loses my entry, so I've had to get into the habit of copying my entry to the clipboard whenever I'm about to post in order to not have to write it all over again. Four of five times, it does this. It always works on the second try. I don't know if it just doesn't like me sitting on the create entry page for more than a few seconds or what.

Also, a little suggestion if it hasn't already been brought up before: would it be at all possible to make "use the time when entry is posted" option checked by default? Frankly, it doesn't make sense to me why the default behavior wouldn't be to have the timestamp reflect when the entry is actually finished/posted. If you want a different time/date/etc., it can be manually changed, but I would think the majority of people are going to be posting in realtime.

(Browser: IE8, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit; I don't use Firefox except rarely, so I don't know if it only does this on my IE or if it's a site-wide problem)

I just turned on beta testing today to have a look, so apologies if this has already been brought up before!

After picking the "Column alongside entry text" option, rather than sitting next to the textbox the column ends up sitting on top of it instead. Basically, it looks like this. I can't adjust the size of the text box to make it smaller (though I can make it bigger). Possibly part of this is because I'm on a smaller laptop screen, because when I zoom out a few times it'll at least sit next to it, although it still looks odd.

If it helps, I'm using Chrome on a Mac.

Not a bug but couldn't the selection wether to have the "Use the time when entry is posted" ticked or not be persistent? It's incredibly irritating to have to remember to tick it every damn time. I know introducing more settings is frowned upon, but couldn't it just be like "Disable Auto-Formatting" on the old update page and use the same setting you used the last time? Please?!

report on crossposting problem.

[personal profile] junbaitarashian 2012-03-26 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
i sometimes like to access dreamwidth through my Zune version 4.5 and i was having problems viewing some of the modules on the create entry page. i commented on that issue and here is how the conversation went (starting from storyfan's comment):

S:I don't see where we click to crosspost.

D:Do you mean with the new Create Entries page? (That's the second of the two beta options -- there are two separate beta tests running at the same time.) If so, the setup is customizable; hit the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the entry form, which will bring you into "settings mode" and let you enable or disable individual modules (and drag and drop the modules to wherever you'd like them to be).

J:I was or am having a similar problem with the crosspost. I do exactly what you say but the module won't come up when I click back to create entry, like it doesn't register I've made that change in the settings. But it's no big deal since maybe my device might not be compleatly compatible with the new js. I'm sure it works fine on my pc though. Thanks for all your hard work :)

D:Hmm. Can you try clearing your browser cache, then restarting your browser? If that doesn't solve it, leave a comment on the Create Entries beta bug report page, ideally with a screenshot if you can manage it, and we'll look into it further. Thanks!

J:No, that wasn't the trick. I believe it's my device and there might not be anything that can be done. So i won't stress you guys out about it, really it's not a big problem (for me). Other than getting the crosspost module to show up on the create entry page my device is handling the changes pretty well ( changes wich I'm loving by the way) so I'm sure the experience will be awesome once I get on my pc :) again thank you so much!

D:Huh. Seriously, please do report it (with information about what kind of device/browser/etc you're using) -- we might not be able to find anybody with the same setup to test/reproduce it, but if we *can* fix it, we want to!

(Also, something to check: set up the crosspost module (using the settings gear) when you're on your desktop, save your settings, then try it again on your mobile device. Once you've customized the page and gotten the modules set up the way you want them, they follow your account, not your browser, so if you can set it up on your desktop and it works on your mobile browser, it probably means that something's just weird about your mobile browser. But please do report it on the dw-beta post for the Create Entries beta; you are almost certainly not the only one using that mobile browser/setup and if it's a bug we can fix we want to fix it!)

J:hmm You might be on to something there... I'll be sure to report it there as soon as I can and also find out if that does the trick! (thank you, thank you!)

And so i checked , did the changes on my pc and now i'm here to report that that did the trick.

Don't know if it's a bug, per se - or just something to file under "user error"

I have my journal set to crosspost by default. I went to post only to Dreamwidth so I unchecked the ticky by Crosspost this entry instead of the ticky by Crosspost Accounts
gigglingkat@LiveJournal

Unchecking the Crosspost this entry grays out the Crosspost Accounts - although it is still checked off - but then when I click Post Entry nothing happens. I remain on the Create Post page and it doesn't add to the journal.

If I go and ticky Crosspost this entry - Unticky the one by gigglingkat@LiveJournal - Post Entry then works.

I'm pretty late to the party on beta features, so I don't know if anyone else mentioned this. It isn't a bug, just a loss of useability: in the new create entry page, I can't just open my icons in another tab any more. If I click the icons header, it either collapses it in the same pages, or opens a blank create entry page in another tab. Any chance of adding a button to bring us to our icons?

Create Entries and Edit Entries:

-- there is no vertical space between the text box and the Preview, Spellcheck and Save/Post buttons. As all have borders it's line upon line which isn't nice on my eyes.

Edit Entries:

-- is also Create Entries (H1 title and windows title). It's a bit confusing.
-- I mentioned it on the bug but the delete link is hard to read in tropo purple (especially with the shadow it has) because it has no background color. How about leaving the bkg transparent but using the same text color as the save button (#222 I believe)? It's also not centered vertically.

I'm not sure what's going on, but when I try to edit my most recent entry it still uses the same beta page for creating entries. I don't mind but:

1. I don't think the beta entry page for editing is supposed to be out? So I thought I'd give a heads up in case something is wrong.

2. When I go to edit the entry, it still won't let me change the privacy level, though it does seem to let me save other changes. (It's a minimum setting of access-only, fortunately, it's not an accidentally public entry I can't make private.)

ETA: Now apparently it's letting me change security, never mind!

So, I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I was just writing an entry and realised I wanted to set a mood, which is one of the modules I normally have hidden since I hardly ever use it. So I went to the gear, and ticked it, and the module appeared. But then I tried to actually set the mood, and couldn't edit the drop-down or click in the text box. I had to hit the save button on the settings from the gear first. But I could still edit the text of the actual entry. I then had to post it, then go back and change my settings on the gear back to normal. What I really wanted was either to be able to edit the mood and then untick it again, or have some other kind of temporary "display all" for when I want something unusual, that would then quickly and easily go back to normal afterwards.

I'm on the latest Chrome on Windows 7 and have Stylish, Adblock and a couple of other extensions, but nothing that would obviously interfere.

Suggestions

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this; I wasn't sure where to post them.

I've just gone to the LJ post page and there are three things I like about it that ours don't have:

1) a mouseover outline indicating that you can click on the icon to load the browser, which made me realize we could do this too. Except there's no outline so it's never crossed my mind that this was clickable. Also the cursor doesn't change I think.

2) autocompletion and ajax-y menu for moods. Autocompletion is an awesome feature; ajaxing selection is nice too although getting a menu isn't (I think there could be a smarter way of selecting a mood than scrolling down a giant menu). Something ala tags browser might not be the best but it would be a huge improvement, imo. It would also resolve the mood/custom mood double field thing which is not ideal.

3) being able to manually enter the name of a community you want to post to. Having to go to community pages you're not a member of but can still post to is not really user-friendly.

I think this is the right place to post this.

When I was posting to a filter a few minutes ago, I noticed it now displays the usernames of the people on the filter. Awesome! Except then I noticed that they overlapped terribly, at least on my screen, if any of the usernames were especially long or were an OpenID account. See this screenshot for an example of what I mean. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, which should be completely up-to-date; my laptop has a 15.6" screen (1366x768px), and I browse with the window full-sized.
