new beta: canary server

Greetings, beta testers! [staff profile] mark has recently added a new "canary" feature to Dreamwidth which will let those who opt in use bleeding-edge site changes before they get pushed out to everyone.

The way it works is this: when you go to https://www.dreamwidth.org/beta and click the "Site-Wide Canary" button, a cookie will be set in your browser which will direct your traffic to the canary server. It's using the same data as the main site, just (sometimes) a slightly newer version of the site code.

• Things are more likely to be broken on the canary! If something goes horribly wrong, you can clear your cookies to go back to using the main site.

• If you lose the canary cookie for any reason, you'll have to opt out and back in on the beta page to go back to using the canary.

Canary users will see a broad ribbon in the lower right corner of their browser window reminding them that they are on the canary. It looks something like this:

Don't feel obligated to rush out and turn this on - it's mostly going to be useful for site developers - but if you do try it, let us know what you think!

Does this mean that we use multiple devices/browsers to access DW, we can only do this for one of them?

Great question! I haven’t tried this yet, but I would think that for each new device or browser you want to enable it on, you would have to visit the beta page and toggle it off and on again as I described above. That’s what sets the cookie it looks for.

Is there a way to turn off that Canary banner after a certain period? It obscures text for me, forcing me to scroll up. Otherwise, it's working fine for me.

You could block the CSS that renders the banner, or opt back out of the beta, but otherwise no. Sorry!

No worries; just thought I’d ask. Thanks!

I do want to note that you'd probably need to block the banner twice. At least with uBlock Origin I can block the visible banner, but there's still an element there that keeps you from clicking and such, which disappears when you block again.

Please can you tell me how to opt out of beta?

For any beta that you’ve opted into, you can go back to https://www.dreamwidth.org/beta and click the button for that feature to turn it back off.

Thank you. I had a slight problem with my layout and wondered if the beta was the cause. It isn't so I opted back in.

I hope this is the correct post to comment on this, but I have Canary turned on and the "Canary" banner currently doesn't allow clickthrough, so sometimes it blocks elements in the post creation page and inbox XD It's a small complaint, but I've got a small enough screen that I have to scroll around, and sometimes buttons at the bottom of some themes overlap with the banner, meaning I have to zoom out to get it out of the way.

As noted above, maybe an add-on to block things would help? Do note that you have to block it twice: once for the image, once for the area.

Should I leave Canary bug reports for pages not specified in other entries here?

The shopping page looks noticeably worse on Firefox than on Chrome.

Running MacOS 14.2.1 (23C71), latest Ffox, latest Chrome, Using Tropospherical Red.

Just noticed the very faint white on beige text at the bottom.... "Need fallback text" under #js-deliverydate-button :)

Welp the checkout didn't work either when trying to hand over to Stripe, though I think you're already away of that... Anyway a little console paste here. I think you can decipher through the French...

What happened to the "browse" button/selection dialog on the usericon menu? I know that the textbox is autosaved so I can press the "back" button when clicking View All and get sent to another page, and my text will still be there, but it's such an unconventional way of doing things when we already had some pop up...

I'm told that the button is a feature only available to paid accounts. Did yours recently expire?

OMG you're right! I forgot about the sale in December when I usually renew and just let it sleep through. Thanks!

I will repeat my past observation that the shopping screen has multiple broken elements on Firefox...
