New Create Entries management page

This post is to report bugs in the new Create Entries page. This is a complete rewrite of the old Update page, in order to allow for future expansion and new features such as draft posts, scheduled posts, recurring posts, expanding the range of what can be posted to your journal, and a whole host of other awesome things.

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Not all features are completely implemented in the new Create Entries page yet. The biggest thing currently missing is the Rich Text editor -- the only option is the plain-old-HTML option. The design of the page is geared towards changing concepts and visual/workflow metaphors around what it means to "post an entry", too -- because of the forthcoming draft and scheduled posts, we needed to adapt some of the language and some of the ways we present concepts -- even though the draft and scheduled post functionality isn't ready to be released yet. So, if something looks awkward or like it doesn't quite fit, it's probably there to allow for something we'll be releasing in the future. (You can still mention it, though!)

Things we also consider to be bugs that should be reported, in addition to something not working right:

* if you can't figure out what to do at any step of the update process
* if you have accessibility-related problems (with your screenreader, with the tab order of the page, with the workflow, etc)
* if something about the new workflow completely breaks the way you use your journal, and you can't figure out any way to work around it (there may be a way to do what you're used to doing, but if you can't figure it out, that's something we might change or might want to document, etc)

You can enable or disable beta testing at any point.

Not yet enabled

* Rich Text editing
* Using the new Create Entries page for editing existing entries
* Using the new Create Entries page for comm admins deleting posts or performing admin overrides
* Draft posts of any type, including the in-browser saved drafts that exist right now

Known/Reported Bugs

* some difficulties crossposting, looks like possibly date-related? we're trying to figure it out.

Should be fixed

* Settings not properly saving when using the "gear" customize-this-page popup; some modules disappear
* Create Entries form being repeated after posting an entry
* Error in link to Beta Features at top of page
* Error messages when using new update page in older versions of Firefox
* Difficulties with IE (oh, IE)
* Errors with time being truncated
* inactive icons showing in the icon browser
* minsecurity of journal not reflecting properly in update form
* whole host of display glitches

I feel silly asking this, because it's probably obvious, but I don't see it and can't find any references to it by comm search or search-in-page here.

Where's the option to set the comment screening level for a post?

In some of my comms, I need to screen responses to certain posts, to maintain participant anonymity. So far I've been able to post the entries and then use the "edit" function to change the screening level, but obviously that won't work once editing uses the new function.

I'm on Windows XP with IE 8.0.6001.18702. I haven't found the option on this device or on my work PC (also WinXP IE8); I haven't tried other browsers. If the new posting page is customizable, I haven't done any of that, so in theory I'm using whatever defaults for this page. Thanks!

ETA: Sigh, please disregard. After I posted this, I found the comments explaining how to get to the settings. (I don't personally like little word-free icons that hide settings, but that's the Wave of the Future! apparently, so I'll learn to live with disappointment.) Sorry for the clutter.

Where is the Disable Auto-Formatting ticky box in beta posting?

Auto-saving drafts works with the old page, and doesn't work with the new page.

I can't seem to make my icon selection stick from the icon browser. Whether I double click the icon or single click and choose Select, it seems to have no effect and simply stays as my default. Even if I post my entry and then go back to edit it, I have to switch to the old create entry page to select an icon other than my default.

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using: Chrome 56.0.2924.87, Windows 10
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem: Not sure what this means, but I did try in incognito mode to make sure none of my extensions were the problem and it still happened.
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which): No, I have no other browsers.
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes: Every time.

Non-Crossposting Bug

[personal profile] siderea 2017-03-04 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've defaulted my journal to crossposting to LJ, but not storing the password. When I go to the beta Create Entry page, as expected, my crosspost settings have the "Crosspost This" tickybox ticked, and below that the specific Crosspost To (LJ) tickybox ticked. This is correct.

However, if I don't want to crosspost, and untick the parent "Crosspost This" ticky box, I get the following bug: the child ticky for LJ grays out but remains ticked; if I attempt to submit the form (with title and body contents and all) by hitting either of the "Post" buttons, the form does not submit, and the label for the empty password field associated with crossposting to LJ turns red, nagging me to populate it. Which I shouldn't need to do if I'm not crossposting.

To post without crossposting, I have to manually turn off the child tickybox (the one specific to crossposting to LJ), and I have to have the parent tickybox ("Crosspost This") on to do so. (When I do, it unticks and grays out the parent tickey box.)

Put another way, unticking the "Crosspost This" ticky box doesn't turn off crossposting; crossposting remains on so long as the child ticky box (indicating the site to crosspost to) is on, and the child ticky box is not unticked by unticking its parent, as is conventional; in that weird state, the form does not submit, and the user is prompted for a password they shouldn't need.

(Also, it took me way too long to figure out what was wrong, because the prompt for the missing password is so low-key, I didn't notice it. (It may have scrolled off the screen at the moment I tried to submit?) All I could tell is that pushing the "post" button did nothing, and I figured it might just be some CSS or JS bug/imcompatibility w/ my browser. Maybe make the "Can't submit, missing required info" notice more prominent?)

Did y'all change something with the auto-complete of tags?

Nevermind. User error. Browser update fixed whatever it was doing.

I'm unsure how one would post a video like a youtube video. I thought you would just put the code in but that doesn't seem to work.

Account security drop-down on mobile beta page

[personal profile] spindizzy 2017-05-30 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Good evening!

Just to let you know, I've had a consistent problem for the last few months while trying to use the mobile version of the beta update page, and I can't find any mention of it on the Current Issues page. The dropdown to change the post security doesn't work at all (cannot select it; is not displayed in the site's style at all) unless I load the page in landscape mode. If I forget and load it while my phone is portrait, turning the phone sideways doesn't fix the problem, I specifically have to reload the page.

This happens every time, and it's fine, I can work around it, it's just an "ugh, forgot AGAIN!" problem, so I thought I'd check to see if anyone else was having this problem. My phone is a Samsung S4, running Chrome version 57.0.2987.132.

Thanks for your time!

My default security is access-locked, but I frequently edit posts to be public. However, I've found that it's impossible to change the security when editing on my phone. I am simply unable to get the button to acknowledge being pressed. Previously I was using a Samsung Galaxy Avant running Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat, currently it's a Huawei Nexus 6P running 8.1.0 Oreo. On both phones I use Firefox, currently version 65.0.1. I don't have any Firefox extensions installed on my phone.

[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<user=kingsmanreversebang>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

I was editing an entry for sign-ups in a comm I run, <user=kingsmanreversebang> and I noticed that the Beta posting page does not have a way to manage comments. Am I missing something? It's there in the default version, but I can't find any drop-down menu in the beta version. If this has been addressed elsewhere, my apologies.

Issue with non-latin fonts in Create Entries edit window

[personal profile] cpthorn 2019-06-07 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the new Create Entries page, but the fonts could be better. It looks like "Monospace" font family is currently used in the edit window, and this is not the best choice for international and non-latin alphabets, for example Ukrainian and some other languages which use Cyrillic script (абвгґдеєжзиіїй). This causes issues on Mac OS where Latin and Cyrillic fonts in Monospace have different weights, it makes the entered text look non-uniform in the edit window (but not in the resulting post because it doesn't use "Monospace" font in view mode). This issue can be easily fixed if we stop using "Monospace" in the Create Entries edit window, and use "Verdana,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif" instead.

Issue with beta entry page - no pictures, filters or mood icons

[personal profile] gatheringrivers 2019-11-21 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Having some *unexpected* display issues this morning, wanted to let you know in case something (some equivalent of asset server?) is choking behind the scenes.

"unexpected" meaning, the browser I normally use (firefox) which has been working all along, suddenly the beta entry page isn't:
* changing icons with each selection
* Isn't popping up the filter list
* Missing the tags - no button for tag browsing
* No icons for mood selections

These things WORK normally otherwise - and in fact, worked just fine yesterday, and I haven't made any changes in addons to the browser in weeks.

Also, the DEFAULT entry page (the non-beta) isn't loading *at all*, regardless of which browser I use.

Markdown and cut issues

[personal profile] idraax 2020-02-15 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've been consistently not getting the cuts to show up when publishing from the beta editor. I'm currently on Windows 10 (I think. Whatever the latest is) and am using Google Chrome: Version 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Here, is what I was trying to publish. I linked to a pastebin because I couldn't figure out how to get the code to show up without it getting rendered.

I had similar issues with Chrome with formatting and all kinds of things. When I swapped back to Firefox it seemed to work really well again. That might not be a realistic solution for you, but it's something at least. I hope whatever it is it works for you again!

Did the create entries page just get a makeover? I can't articulate the difference, but it looks... well, uglier. Very boxy. I think there are sharp corners where there used to be round ones?

"Use Current Time" Option

[personal profile] bemused_writer 2020-07-24 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm not sure this really counts as a "glitch" or not, but I figured I would share in case it is.

I was working on a draft of a post, posted it on private a few days ago so I could come back to it later, and then finished it up today and posted it on public. I chose the "use current time" option so that it would reflect when it was actually finished and posted for everyone to see.

However, I noticed that choosing this option didn't reflect in the Reading page. That is, it's not showing up as a recent post. When I went back several pages, I found it eventually, which makes me think it's reflecting the original post time and not the new one.

I haven't yet had a chance to try to reproduce this, so I can't give any helpful info on that. I'm using Windows 10 (version 2004) and Firefox 78.0.2 (64-bit).

Position of the Casual HTML, etc. Selector

[personal profile] archangelbeth 2020-07-26 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not a bug! Quite.

I will almost never change out of Casual HTML, and the presence of the field is currently distracting in its current location. Is there a way to make it one of the mobile modules, at least insofar as moving it between 3 locations?
Suggesting...
A: Where it is.
B: Above the Subject field (easier to ignore there).
C: Below the text box (and therefore between the text-entry box and the Post, etc., buttons).
C i: Make it manifest as one of those buttons, so it'd look something like:
Post | a public entry | as Username | in Casual HTML | [long space] | Preview

(Or, if possible for it to just shrink if it hits the edge of another module, D: anywhere. I've got room under my icon-selector module box thingie! It'd look great there! ^_^ )

I'm using Celerity Site Skin, if that matters.

Thanks!

Icon prioritisation change (bug?) when paid expires

[personal profile] conjobs 2020-08-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hey there

Not sure where to post this and also not sure if this was an intended change, but my account just expired in the middle of posting a reply. Previously, my understanding is that this would revert to:

Priority 1: default icon always takes up one slot regardless of upload date.
Priority 2: the 14 icons used most frequently when creating entries in my personal journal
Priority 3: if I have not used 14 it will then backfill the remainder with my most recently uploaded icons.

However today I noticed it is only using priority 1 and 3, not priority 2.

idk how much this is getting worked on, but the beta page currently looks like a bomb went off. Instead of having all the widgets nestled neatly around the text box, they've spread out randomly, leaving huge patches of blank space on the page.

I'm also still kind of surprised that I need to switch back and forth between having beta features turned on or off, depending on which features I need. Having both rich text AND the ability to browse tags in the same layout would greatly improve the entire experience.

Hi! I'm finding as of recently that when I want to post an entry, if I don't have my html in a specific order, it refuses to publish my post until I fix this up. The note that comes up regarding it says that I haven't finished closing a tag, which isn't entirely true since I have closed the tag. (It also isn't entirely clear—it took me a little bit to figure out what it meant.)

This is what it says:
Unclosed tag(s) in entry: [tag here]

An example below (sorry, I have no idea how else to show you the coding but textboxes):

If I have the below, it will refuse to post:

But if I change it to the below, it will post:

I used to be able to post if I had my html in the order of the second box. I was just wondering if there's a possibility for this to go back to how it was before? (I was able to post something with the first example of html coding in November.)

i'm reporting the same issue as the person above me. while using the new create entries page, if i have not closed EVERY open tag, it won't post, even if the tags are things that don't need to be closed, like 'li' beneath a 'ul' (li can be closed, sure, but doing so formats everything differently). i have been using firefox but also tried it in vivaldi (which is a chrome fork) and got the same results.
