New Create Entries management page

This post is to report bugs in the new Create Entries page. This is a complete rewrite of the old Update page, in order to allow for future expansion and new features such as draft posts, scheduled posts, recurring posts, expanding the range of what can be posted to your journal, and a whole host of other awesome things.

When reporting bugs, please include:

* The browser name, browser version number, and operating system you're using
* The steps you took to reproduce the problem
* Whether or not you've tested the same steps in another browser (and if so, which)
* Whether you get the same result every time you try the same steps, or if it only happens sometimes

If we can't reproduce the problem under the same browser and operating system, we may also ask you for a list of any browser extensions you have installed.

Not all features are completely implemented in the new Create Entries page yet. The biggest thing currently missing is the Rich Text editor -- the only option is the plain-old-HTML option. The design of the page is geared towards changing concepts and visual/workflow metaphors around what it means to "post an entry", too -- because of the forthcoming draft and scheduled posts, we needed to adapt some of the language and some of the ways we present concepts -- even though the draft and scheduled post functionality isn't ready to be released yet. So, if something looks awkward or like it doesn't quite fit, it's probably there to allow for something we'll be releasing in the future. (You can still mention it, though!)

Things we also consider to be bugs that should be reported, in addition to something not working right:

* if you can't figure out what to do at any step of the update process
* if you have accessibility-related problems (with your screenreader, with the tab order of the page, with the workflow, etc)
* if something about the new workflow completely breaks the way you use your journal, and you can't figure out any way to work around it (there may be a way to do what you're used to doing, but if you can't figure it out, that's something we might change or might want to document, etc)

You can enable or disable beta testing at any point.

Not yet enabled

* Rich Text editing
* Using the new Create Entries page for editing existing entries
* Using the new Create Entries page for comm admins deleting posts or performing admin overrides
* Draft posts of any type, including the in-browser saved drafts that exist right now

Known/Reported Bugs

* some difficulties crossposting, looks like possibly date-related? we're trying to figure it out.

Should be fixed

* Settings not properly saving when using the "gear" customize-this-page popup; some modules disappear
* Create Entries form being repeated after posting an entry
* Error in link to Beta Features at top of page
* Error messages when using new update page in older versions of Firefox
* Difficulties with IE (oh, IE)
* Errors with time being truncated
* inactive icons showing in the icon browser
* minsecurity of journal not reflecting properly in update form
* whole host of display glitches

Interesting--this is working for me as far as I can tell, whether I go through the community post button or switch to a community in the default posting interface. Are JS errors coming up in the console when you switch posting-tos? What browser?

General question more than bug thing -

If you turn on beta, is everything supposed to display (as far as site scheme) in tropo-Red?

I'm getting mixed results and some things display in my selected tropo-purple, but lots of other things are tropo-red.

(it is entirely possible it's something on my end and i'm waaaaaay to tired to investigate right now, maybe inna morning *g*)

Nope! I suspect it has to do with cookies / unrelated to beta. Do you have ljlogin or a similar extension installed by any chance?

Using: IE8 (boo, hiss! Work computer), Windows 7 (don't know which one, though, can't find it anywhere)
Problem: Tags aren't popping up when I type them in - usually it shows me the tag in a little bubble with an X on it, now it's just like the old way. Doesn't do that on Safari or Firefox on home Mac, Nook Color or home Windows computer

Anything I should do, please let me know.

Here's a link for the image of what I meant. It's also not showing the picture that goes with the mood?

I'm getting directed to a new page again when I click on the gear, both for Maxthon and IE. On the other hand, the buttons are working, so if I want a new panel to show up, and I save it and click on the link to go back, it works.

The autocomplete box for my tags isn't working either for Maxthon and IE. It looks different too: in Maxthon and IE, the tag box has two buttons on the right hand side that have the up and down scroll arrows on them, though the arrows are faded out and non-clickable.

And clicking on the preview button reloads the page in Maxthon and IE.

I think that's everything...

Hello. I have an accessibility bug, I do believe.

I'd test this on another screen reader/in another browser, but the only screen reader I have is the one I'm using, and the only browser other than Firefox I have is IE. (Blech IE) so here goes.

Name of Browser: Mozilla Firefox 7.0
OS: Windows Vista
Screen Reader: NVDA
Issue: It seems in the tag browser that the list and check boxes aren't labeled in a way NVDA will pick them up. I assume what is supposed to happen is if you check the box next to a tag, it will show up on the list there for you to use. Well, the first tag is properly labeled. The rest aren't in a way NVDA will accept.

I'm not sure what advice I can give you on helping you fix it. But if you need to know anything else, please don't hesitate to ask me and I will give you the information to the best of my ability.

Hmmm. Testing out a theory: are there any special characters in the second tag on the list? That is, anything that isn't a letter or a number (spaces count as a special character here, so do any punctuation marks)

Little nagging thing: often I only want to enter one tag. In the old update page, I would just type that tag in (for example, 'books') and then move on. In the new update, I have to press enter or type a comma or click on the popunder prompt, otherwise it doesn't post with the tag. Possibly this is desired behaviour, but if so I think it needs a warning, because it's likely to confuse people.

Opera 11.51/Ubuntu 11.10, no tag autocomplete

When I type in the tagbox, I expect that there's autocomplete. Also, I cannot suss out any way to see a list or browser of current tags on the journal, EXCEPT the link that says "Go to journal tags" which takes me to exampleuser.dreamwidth.org/tag/ IN THE SAME TAB, thereby deleting any entry text or settings I have previously started. That is not terribly useful.

ETA: Also, I don't have access to an icon browser in this setup. The icon browser is currently supposed to be active?

It occurs to me that this may be a problem with an odd version of Java. I have installed:

OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11pre) (6b23~pre10-0ubuntu5)
OpenJDK Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode)

ETA, again: Running Chromium 14 on the same machine, and boy that tags management and icon browser are BE YOU TEE FUL! Will be so happy when they work in Opera.

Beta posting interface

[personal profile] mrshamill 2011-11-12 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi Denise, Fu, whoever --

I'm not sure if this has been already brought to your attention or if it's a known bug. I'm using Firefox 8.0 at home (64-bit) and at work (32-bit) and when I post using the beta interface I don't see any option to turn on/off the cross-posting to another journal (specifically LJ for me). It *does* cross-post for me, but if I wanted it to not cross-post, I don't know where to go to turn off that option.

Other than that, everything is hunky-dory!

Tag Sorting Question

[personal profile] sweet_sparrow 2011-11-15 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Just because I'm curious (and only just noticed): what's the reason you decided to sort the tags in the tags browser horizontally instead of vertically? (E.g. the tags A, B, C and D get sorted across, not down.)

Re: Tag Sorting Question

[personal profile] fu 2011-11-19 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yeah, that!

It's to accomodate different screen sizes -- it's possible to decide beforehand to split the tags into, say, three columns and do them vertically, but that might be too wide for small screens, while leaving too much unused space in larger.

Letting the items flow across the screen is much easier (and less prone to breakage) than any of the other methods we tried.

I've worked out the gear thing, now, so it's all awesome!

As a wish list thing, because my mind is lazy sometimes, could the drop down options, instead of showing "journal default" actually just show the option that is the journal default? I'm not sure that this would work for anyone else, but I'm just trusting that my defaults are fine (I did set them up myself), but I can't remember what they are.

If I were writing it for me (so not actually advice, just information):

Comment settings: [email comments]
[don't email]
[turn off comments]

Screen comments: [none]
[anonymous only]
[non-access list]
[all comments]

Also, will I eventually be able to post from http://secondsilk.dreamwidth.org/entry/new ? I can post from secondsilk.dreamwidth.org/update.bml (and this redirects to the beta posting page nicely), but I'd love to be able to just write over the end of the URL from my reading list in order to post.

I've been on vacation, so I just got to try this now. When I first went in and changed nothing - hit "Post Entry" absolutely nothing happened.

When I clicked the sprocket I got all distracted moving things where I wanted them that I forgot all about it and hit "Post Entry" again - it worked.

Is it possible that you HAVE to set up the screen for it to work? It's working just fine for me now so I can't get you screenshots.

The only thing I could think of is that it needed my lj pw to crosspost and because that module wasn't visible yet, it couldn't post? But it didn't post to DW either.

Having trouble previewing and using the tag box in Opera. By 'trouble' I mean the preview button doesn't do squat and the tags box doesn't do the show tags starting with those letters thing or the put each tag in its own little box with an x thing. Everything's fine in Chrome. I'm not running NotScripts in Opera, I checked.

I love the new create entries page so much! I have changed my settings to not display some of the things I never use/change, and I have reorganized them spatially in a way that makes sense to me, and these features are amazing! AMAZING, I say!!! Have not had any problems with it yet, the one tiny niggling detail I am mentioning is that at the top, the create poll link runs into the preview link in a way that doesn't look as good (and also I am not sure why preview and spell check are pretty buttons and create poll is a bare link). I am on Windows XP right now using Firefox 8.0.

I have found a problem after all: display date is defaulting to a set date/time in the past (it looks like it's whatever date&time I last posted, though I'm not sure about that yet). When I hit "Post" I get an error message (displayed below) and the subject line, icon, *and security level* change back to my defaults, though the text of the entry is still there in the entry text box. So I fix the time, overlook the fact that the subject, icon, and security level have changed, and hit "Post" again... and get an entry accidentally posted at the wrong security level. I see [personal profile] fu's comment elsewhere indicating that that part might be fixed when drafts are enabled. But the defaulting to a set date/time in the past is still a problem.

The error message:
Error
- Incorrect time value: You have an entry which was posted at 2011-11-15 21:12, but you're trying to post an entry before this. Please check the date and time of both entries. If the other entry is set in the future on purpose, edit that entry to use the "Date Out of Order" option. Otherwise, use the "Date Out of Order" option for this entry instead.

Browser: Firefox 8.0 on this Windows 7 64-bit computer; I've noticed the same behavior on some other device--I don't remember for sure which device, but I think it was my T-Mobile G2 running Android 2.3.4, using the built-in browser.

P.S. I saw [staff profile] denise's discussion of entry date/time being a bikeshed issue, and I can respect that, but I *think* this is different: I'm not as worried about whether it defaults to one option or the other as I am about the fact that the date it's picking is unconnected to the time I'm writing or posting the entry.

I created an entry using the beta interface, then had to edit it, which gave me the regular interface. I noticed while editing it that my tags didn't appear in the tag window, so I added it back in. When I edited it a second time, the tag was there. So there might be some communications issues between the two posting pages.

I'm not sure this has been reported before, so sorry if I duplicate, but...

I usually code my entries entirely, and so I keep the "Disable Auto-Formatting" option checked. As far as I can tell, there's no such option on the new page.

Currently I post using the new page then edit with the old one and check the box, and I know I could also use the raw tag, but the checkbox is so much more convenient, especially now that it remembers my preference.

really sorry if I am repeating something said already. I'm posting on the fly.

1) I'd really love an embed media link next to the create poll link.

2) When I clicked the settings button next to the spellcheck button, it took me to a separate page, and then when I clicked "return to Create Entries" my entry text was gone. If I try to click "save" instead, the options page just refreshes.

IE8, Windows XP (this is my work computer, sorry. I'm sure it's all lovely on Chrome!) ETA: having just read the comment three above this one, I should mention I'm also using InPrivate mode, so if this is a JS problem it's not your fault!

Crossposting isn't working for me again. At first it was failing and giving a message about that (which makes sense because LiveJournal is undergoing another DDoS attack, I suppose) but now it's de-selecting the option again.

So I'll have it set to crosspost, it'll tell me it's going to crosspost, nothing happens. When I edit the entry, I see the crosspost option has been de-selected once again.

I just thought I'd say something in case it wasn't intentional, though it did occur to me maybe you'd shut off crossposting because of the DDoS attacks on LiveJournal. (

And never mind, I finally got failed messages. I guess LiveJournal's so slow right now it's taking the crosspost 15 minutes to half an hour before it realizes that it has failed.

I've been updating my journal with a lot of backdated entries from 2003 from a different service, all manually, and when I try to hit the "browse" button for tags, it appears to automatically post my entry instead of letting me browse the tags! It's happened twice. I'm using Firefox 3.6.24 on a Windows 7 computer, and I haven't tested with any other browsers. I'm not sure if it's just something that hasn't been enabled or if it's just actually broken, but it startled me the first time it happened and made an accidental crosspost! The tag browser seems like it's about to come up-- a window comes up-- and then it just very abruptly reloads the page and the entry is posted.

Viewing on iPhone: Not Sure This Is A Bug

[personal profile] archangelbeth 2011-12-28 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
iPhone 4S, iOS 5. I did a Post from the web page, and it actually didn't look all that bad -- all the boxes were lined up underneath a rather narrow entry-box. The main complaints with that manifestation:

1: the entry box was way narrow -- it didn't use the phone's real-estate by at least several pixels. I don't know if this is something that can be adjusted to fit by-phone, or if it's a case of "we have to hit an average and it has to look good on iPhone 1s and Android stuff, too." I'm in Celerity, and the Celerity toolbar takes up the left third, the entry box takes up the middle third, and the right third is blank.

The colored part of the boxes stays in that middle third, but words frequently run over into the right third.

2: The icon selector has the icon covering up most of the "browse" and "random" buttons. I can hit the button and usually get the right effect out of Random, but sometimes I hit the icon instead and get the "this is your" box. Browse is kinda ugly-looking in how it displays the keywords of the currently-selected icon (it is in a box that wraps around, looking funny, and slightly overlapping the "select" button). Some of my icons have a ? -- didn't load right.

Pressing the "x" on the pop-up makes the keyword selector wheel show up. Not intuitive; I'd have expected to just make the pop-up Browse window go away.
